Megachurch Pastor has a message for women: ‘This Bible verse proves God owns you’

Arkansas Pastor Jeff Crawford of the Cross Church, the same church attended by the Duggar Family, doesn’t think women can control their own bodies and says as much by proclaiming that “God instead owns you.” He claims that the Bible proves this with the following verse from 1 Corinthians 6:19-20:

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”

He used the term in context of abortion and pornography, denouncing women who think they have the right to make up their own minds about what they would choose to do with their own body, as they see fit.

“This idea that you hear about in the abortion debate that it’s a woman’s right to choose and she has the right over her own body, no, that’s not true! What that means is that your arms and your legs and your head, it all belongs to God. Thats what you get when you read 1 Corintians. It says your body has been body with a price, literally your physical body, not just your soul, so God owns you. Think about that the next time you go to a buffet. Thing about that the next time you go to get a tattoo, and I’m not saying no to tattoos, just make sure you’re glorifying God with your body.”

While the pastor made other references to suggest men also need to be “owned” by God, he was specifically referring to women when he made the comment.

He also gave an anti-pornography sermon in front of the Duggars shortly after Josh Duggar’s scandal broke revealing that he had cheated on his wife. After this had happened, though, he seemed to stress that wasn’t as bad.

“I know there are some folks in here today – pornography is a deal in your life. We’re for healing. We’re for forgiveness. There is no judgment here.”

What if a woman cheated on her husband, would that be okay? There’s clearly a double standard in the conservative Christian community.

This isn’t the first time a pastor has isolated women apart from men in regards to the same reasonings of the Bible. A Christian pastor from the Lord’s Propeller Redemption Church created quite a stir last year when he ordered female members of the church to remove their bras and underwear before coming to church so that Christ can freely enter their bodies with his spirit. He apparently thought undergarments were “ungodly” and that they would suffer the damnation of hell if they didn’t follow his command. It’s important to note here, that he didn’t ask men to remove their undergarments.

The truth is, pastors twist and contort the Bible any way they seem fit in order to reinforce their sexists beliefs. They don’t think women are on equal footing with men or are entitled to the same rights – at the same time they claim God loves them just as much. There’s no wonder where Josh Duggar got his ideas from.

    1. The Bible instructs: ““Do not trim off the hair on your temples or trim your beards.” (Leviticus 19:27 – New Living Translation) Pastor Crawford, looks like you need stoning.

Also see Leviticus 19:19. (New Living Translation)
"You must obey all my decrees… Do not wear clothing woven from two different kinds of thread.” Preacher, that cheap suit you are wearing is at least 50% polyester. I doubt you can survive two stonings.

Do people cherry-pick the verses that reinforce their prejudice and ignore the ones they don't like? Just asking.

    2. Since I have no belief in his 'god' or his 'bible' it simply does not apply to me. Other than it makes me sick that other women feel and believe his words. The control that churches and their male pastors exert over women is despicable. From the invention of religion this control is at the top of the list of priorities and it always will be. They wonder why people are leaving their organized religions in droves.

    3. Why are there so many men these days trying to use the Bible to beat women up? They are a disgrace. And stop climbing into everyone’s bed sheets and direct who should sleep with whom – it is none of your business, you’re a busy body. You are incredibly insecure. Stop telling others who they should sleep with and what they should do and go get a job where you can make a positive difference.
And one more thing, since WWII, women have taken care of families, homes, raised the children and have had to take on careers. Everytime one of you has a new fantasy about how we should live our lives, you think that God has just touched your shoulder. Well, guess what, if he truly was there, he was just trying to shake you to wake the f___ up. None of us need to be part of your fantasies, but every once in a while it would be nice to have a man do something nice for a female, instead of always trying to remake us and take advantage of us. Oh, and just for the record, I believe I just felt God’s hand on my shoulder and then he whispered in my ear, “Good job, Marilyn”.

      • I have a husband who since I have become disabled does almost all the cooking he did all the laundry, I can’t do steps, he does grocery shopping and surprised me with a dozen roses at least once a month. When I worked he would sent flowers to every woman with note that said it’s appreciate a woman day. He says man was out here to live and care for a woman. We’ve been married 50 years. Not nuts enough to let him go lol
