Evangelicals: God Sent Trump to Be King

A chilling op-ed in today’s NY Times by author Katherine Stewart, who has extensively studied and written about the Christian right, says that the far right have been pushing a meme for several years now that Donald Trump, conman and egomaniac, has been sent by God to be “a vessel for the purposes of the faithful” in the role of King of the United States of America.

Unbeknownst to people with even a tenuous grip on reality, prior to the midterms a thousand theaters showed “The Trump Prophecy,” a film about a firefighter who, in a blinding orgiastic epiphany, picks up a Bible and turns to Isaiah 45, “which describes the anointment of King Cyrus by God.” Get it, Isaiah “45” — Trump “45”? What more proof do you need, right?

Stewart goes on, saying that evangelical author and speaker Lance Wallnau has said:

I believe the 45th president is meant to be an Isaiah 45 Cyrus [who will] restore … us from cultural collapse.

And in this telling it is not at all paradoxical that Trump is a non-believer intent on wrecking our democracy and government. Apparently the story of Cyrus is of a nonbeliever who becomes the first emperor of Babylon (“Babble-on” — it’s all starting to come together now, isn’t it?) and frees the Jews.

Stewart provides numerous quotations from across the spectrum of the religious right leadership pushing this meme that God sent Trump to be King, including Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council and Ralph Drollinger who leads weekly bible study groups at the White House attended by Mike Pence and members of the Cabinet.

In her article Stewart confirms our worst suspicions about what Trump’s core followers see in him:

This isn’t the religious right we thought we knew. The Christian nationalist movement today is authoritarian, paranoid and patriarchal at its core. They aren’t fighting a culture war. They’re making a direct attack on democracy itself.

And, according to Stewart, Trump has been egging them on, goading their preachers for becoming too “soft” — as he openly muses about becoming “President for life”.

  1. Of course GOD would approve of a man that separates children from their parents; grabs women by their genitalia, mocks the disabled, lies multiple times a day and trashes our democracy at every opportunity. The Bible states that SATAN is the God of this world.

  2. Remember one thing that God set up and he tear down purpose for people to start worshipping him Jesus Christ and our Lord and Savior. Don't worshipper the man on earth worshipper the Superior being in heaven Amen!!

  3. When Trump got elected, he was totally ill-equipped mentally and politically for the job. He still is, as you can see by the turmoil and total shambles of what's going on in his administration. What some guy called 'balls' I call ignorant, rude bully-ism that has no place in our society. In my job I deal with people over seas and they all tell me he's nothing but a joke over there. The world is laughing at us and we should be ashamed of our selves. The fact that his cabinet just sits there in total fear of him and does nothing about him is the worst part of this whole thing. Now lets get back to 'balls'. I wish that someone in his cabinet had the 'balls' to stand up to him but apparently they're all shaking in their shoes. And as far as his wall is concerned; build a 20 foot wall and I'll get a 21 foot ladder and climb over it.

  4. Recent history relates another ego-maniac: Hitler, the Nazis Germany 1934 – 1945. He actually thought himself to be God.
We have not excuse, if we do not learn from history, we are bound to repeat it. Evangelicals in USA are being lead astray. Shake your heads, see if you can recognize what is happening in your country,.

  5. He is noway near King Cyrus. Cyrus is to free or protect the Hebrews and not the Jews who are fake Judians, fake Hebrews. So if Trump is compared to Cyrus then he should protect the African-Americans instead.

    Isaiah 45:1
“The LORD says to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have held, to subdue nations before him, and strip kings of their armor; to open the doors before him, and the gates shall not be shut”
    Isaiah 45:2
““I will go before you and make the rough places smooth. I will break the doors of bronze in pieces and cut apart the bars of iron.”
    Isaiah 45:3
“I will give you the treasures of darkness and hidden riches of secret places, that you may know that it is I, Yahuwah , who call you by your name, even the LORD of Israel.”
    Isaiah 45:4
“For Jacob my servant’s sake, and Israel my chosen, I have called you by your name. I have given you a title, though you have not known me.”
    Isaiah 45:5
“I am the LORD, and there is no one else. Besides me, there is no other. I will strengthen you, though you have not known me,”

  6. Evangelicals see Trump as a man sent by god, and this is completely reasonable. After all Trump and god are alike in so many ways: Both either create damage or at least indifferent to the suffering caused by it. Both Trump and god favor selected racial and ethnic over others. The strongest and most emotional following for both is centered in less educated and less empathetic portions of the population. Both command strict discipline from male dominated organizations that cannot conjure enough independence and rationality to confront important issues – the Catholic Church and the US Congress. Both respond to doubt and criticism with great anger – the wrath of god, the wrath of Trump. So indeed, Trump can reasonably be considered a “man of god.”

    • What nonsense! The God I know gave us a fertile earth and all the elements that has sustained life infinitely. The God you describe is your invention. You have interpreted the concepts of writers who actually tried to describe the nature of humankind in the allegories of the Old Testament; not the nature of God that was introduced to humankind in the doctrine of Jesus Christ in the New Testament. The Genesis account describes the vulnerability of humankind in the face of liars who easily agitate the desires of humankind. “…Study to show yourself approved unto God of your ability to discern the word of truth unto the dividing asunder of bone and marrow…” And also be reminded to tell the liar when the liar quotes what is written that, “…it is also written…”

  7. Teaching the theory of the big bang or cavemen is also something that must be taken on faith as there is no direct proof of those ideas. I hold such things called science as simply a religion called Science of Theoretical Ideas.

  8. This is a ridiculous article. I am a Christian. I don't consider President Trump a king. He will either be re-elected in 2020, or he won't. Katherine Stewart should never have written this article. All it does is divide people, and I don't believe a word that she wrote. Geesh.

  9. Katherine is right. There is a fringe movement of those who call themselves Christians and who believe in and rely on modern-day “prophets” and self-appointed “apostles.” These “prophets” like Mark “The Fireman” Taylor claim that G-d told them that Trump is the anointed of G-d and will be used to prosper the US, that Trump will be a man of his word, etc.

The problem is that these prophets are often wrong, for instance Mark Taylor said that Trump would win the 2012 election, not the 2016 one when Obama was instead re-elected. There are many errors and many things yet to be seen. I believe Mark Taylor and many others from his movement to be false prophets.

I mentioned “The movement.” This is the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR), and they believe they Christians are to set up the Kingdom of G-d here on earth before Christ returns to reign and rule. They speak of conquering the “Seven Mountains/ Spheres of Influence” in America: 1) Arts & Entertainment, 2) Family 3) Education, 4) Government, 5) Business, 6) Religion, 7) Media through prayer and putting Christians into key positions in each sphere.

The NAR uses the Bible and biblical language to mean something very different from the original intent of Scripture and traditional faith. They have infused New Age philosophies into their teaching and have indeed infiltrated all seven spheres. In fact 80% of the books in Christian bookstores are now written by NAR teachers, and the Church has unknowingly received their teaching, thinking it to be biblical, even though the prophecies contain errors and are priven false over and over again. So… This is partially how we got to where we are now… very scary! Study it for yourself. You’ll see what I’m talking about.

  10. Funny thing. I spoke with my god a few hours ago and she said she had nothing to do with this jerk but she would ask around. Well she just got back to me and said after talking to all their other gods that no one is claiming this flaming ahole. So they all would like an answer….WHAT god are they talking about as they cannot find that one.

  11. Might give more legitimacy to your argument if you would do proper research. Since you call Cyrus, “first emperor of Babylon”, I have to question all your research and points… One false assertion equals flaws in all…it truly demeans all you say.

  12. He is a curse on America, the Christian Right group and taking us Dow the slippery slope to destruction quickly! I am fearful of him and his lifestyle, his immorality,, lying, cheating, foul mouth, womanizing and stupidity!! The churches in America are declining and with the groups like Falwells, Franklin Graham, and multiple others I understand why. Giving him a pass on his lifestyle does not speak well for Christians. His lifestyle does not exemplify Christianity! Recently read his quote that he did not remember ever asking God for forgiveness,, as he did not want to bother GOD, He needs to defect to Saudi Arabia, Russia or North Korea, but they would refuse him, I am sure.
