Evangelicals: God Sent Trump to Be King

A chilling op-ed in today’s NY Times by author Katherine Stewart, who has extensively studied and written about the Christian right, says that the far right have been pushing a meme for several years now that Donald Trump, conman and egomaniac, has been sent by God to be “a vessel for the purposes of the faithful” in the role of King of the United States of America.

Unbeknownst to people with even a tenuous grip on reality, prior to the midterms a thousand theaters showed “The Trump Prophecy,” a film about a firefighter who, in a blinding orgiastic epiphany, picks up a Bible and turns to Isaiah 45, “which describes the anointment of King Cyrus by God.” Get it, Isaiah “45” — Trump “45”? What more proof do you need, right?

Stewart goes on, saying that evangelical author and speaker Lance Wallnau has said:

I believe the 45th president is meant to be an Isaiah 45 Cyrus [who will] restore … us from cultural collapse.

And in this telling it is not at all paradoxical that Trump is a non-believer intent on wrecking our democracy and government. Apparently the story of Cyrus is of a nonbeliever who becomes the first emperor of Babylon (“Babble-on” — it’s all starting to come together now, isn’t it?) and frees the Jews.

Stewart provides numerous quotations from across the spectrum of the religious right leadership pushing this meme that God sent Trump to be King, including Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council and Ralph Drollinger who leads weekly bible study groups at the White House attended by Mike Pence and members of the Cabinet.

In her article Stewart confirms our worst suspicions about what Trump’s core followers see in him:

This isn’t the religious right we thought we knew. The Christian nationalist movement today is authoritarian, paranoid and patriarchal at its core. They aren’t fighting a culture war. They’re making a direct attack on democracy itself.

And, according to Stewart, Trump has been egging them on, goading their preachers for becoming too “soft” — as he openly muses about becoming “President for life”.

  1. When Trump got elected, he was totally ill-equipped mentally and politically for the job. He still is, as you can see by the turmoil and total shambles of what's going on in his administration. What some guy called 'balls' I call ignorant, rude bully-ism that has no place in our society. In my job I deal with people over seas and they all tell me he's nothing but a joke over there. The world is laughing at us and we should be ashamed of our selves. The fact that his cabinet just sits there in total fear of him and does nothing about him is the worst part of this whole thing. Now lets get back to 'balls'. I wish that someone in his cabinet had the 'balls' to stand up to him but apparently they're all shaking in their shoes. And as far as his wall is concerned; build a 20 foot wall and I'll get a 21 foot ladder and climb over it.

  2. Recent history relates another ego-maniac: Hitler, the Nazis Germany 1934 – 1945. He actually thought himself to be God.
We have not excuse, if we do not learn from history, we are bound to repeat it. Evangelicals in USA are being lead astray. Shake your heads, see if you can recognize what is happening in your country,.

  3. He is noway near King Cyrus. Cyrus is to free or protect the Hebrews and not the Jews who are fake Judians, fake Hebrews. So if Trump is compared to Cyrus then he should protect the African-Americans instead.

    Isaiah 45:1
“The LORD says to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have held, to subdue nations before him, and strip kings of their armor; to open the doors before him, and the gates shall not be shut”
    Isaiah 45:2
““I will go before you and make the rough places smooth. I will break the doors of bronze in pieces and cut apart the bars of iron.”
    Isaiah 45:3
“I will give you the treasures of darkness and hidden riches of secret places, that you may know that it is I, Yahuwah , who call you by your name, even the LORD of Israel.”
    Isaiah 45:4
“For Jacob my servant’s sake, and Israel my chosen, I have called you by your name. I have given you a title, though you have not known me.”
    Isaiah 45:5
“I am the LORD, and there is no one else. Besides me, there is no other. I will strengthen you, though you have not known me,”

  4. Evangelicals see Trump as a man sent by god, and this is completely reasonable. After all Trump and god are alike in so many ways: Both either create damage or at least indifferent to the suffering caused by it. Both Trump and god favor selected racial and ethnic over others. The strongest and most emotional following for both is centered in less educated and less empathetic portions of the population. Both command strict discipline from male dominated organizations that cannot conjure enough independence and rationality to confront important issues – the Catholic Church and the US Congress. Both respond to doubt and criticism with great anger – the wrath of god, the wrath of Trump. So indeed, Trump can reasonably be considered a “man of god.”

    • What nonsense! The God I know gave us a fertile earth and all the elements that has sustained life infinitely. The God you describe is your invention. You have interpreted the concepts of writers who actually tried to describe the nature of humankind in the allegories of the Old Testament; not the nature of God that was introduced to humankind in the doctrine of Jesus Christ in the New Testament. The Genesis account describes the vulnerability of humankind in the face of liars who easily agitate the desires of humankind. “…Study to show yourself approved unto God of your ability to discern the word of truth unto the dividing asunder of bone and marrow…” And also be reminded to tell the liar when the liar quotes what is written that, “…it is also written…”
