Evangelicals: God Sent Trump to Be King

A chilling op-ed in today’s NY Times by author Katherine Stewart, who has extensively studied and written about the Christian right, says that the far right have been pushing a meme for several years now that Donald Trump, conman and egomaniac, has been sent by God to be “a vessel for the purposes of the faithful” in the role of King of the United States of America.

Unbeknownst to people with even a tenuous grip on reality, prior to the midterms a thousand theaters showed “The Trump Prophecy,” a film about a firefighter who, in a blinding orgiastic epiphany, picks up a Bible and turns to Isaiah 45, “which describes the anointment of King Cyrus by God.” Get it, Isaiah “45” — Trump “45”? What more proof do you need, right?

Stewart goes on, saying that evangelical author and speaker Lance Wallnau has said:

I believe the 45th president is meant to be an Isaiah 45 Cyrus [who will] restore … us from cultural collapse.

And in this telling it is not at all paradoxical that Trump is a non-believer intent on wrecking our democracy and government. Apparently the story of Cyrus is of a nonbeliever who becomes the first emperor of Babylon (“Babble-on” — it’s all starting to come together now, isn’t it?) and frees the Jews.

Stewart provides numerous quotations from across the spectrum of the religious right leadership pushing this meme that God sent Trump to be King, including Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council and Ralph Drollinger who leads weekly bible study groups at the White House attended by Mike Pence and members of the Cabinet.

In her article Stewart confirms our worst suspicions about what Trump’s core followers see in him:

This isn’t the religious right we thought we knew. The Christian nationalist movement today is authoritarian, paranoid and patriarchal at its core. They aren’t fighting a culture war. They’re making a direct attack on democracy itself.

And, according to Stewart, Trump has been egging them on, goading their preachers for becoming too “soft” — as he openly muses about becoming “President for life”.

  1. I don't think it's fair to group an entire religion into these comments. I happen to be a Christian who happens to attend an Evangelical church and not everybody in this… category agrees with the current administration. A lot of Evangelicals pray that he will be replaced…somehow. Articles like this just cause more division. If you CAN blame (and you better be sure you don't have anything that anyone else can blame YOU for), then blame individuals…not groups.

    • No one here is blaming all of Christianity, that is a straw man deflection. And so is the argument that articles like these only cause division. This is very much the product of a highly organized, well-funded group of evangelicals determined to create a theocracy for their own exclusive benefit.

  2. Donald Trump is the best thing to happen to Ameeica since Lord Jesus. He is the savior of people from Doomsday. Lord sent him for a reason — to right the wrong things happening to our country. He is a messiah of the young and old. Like a captain, he is directing America to a safe place without any accidents. He is kicking Satan out of America and saving people from rapists and murderers. He should be President for Life.

    • “For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if [it were] possible, even the elect.” Mark 13:22; also see Matt. 24:24
“For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.” Matt. 24:5; also see Mark 13:6

    • Are you kidding? You realize America was founded on pillaging, disease, murder, and corruption. .done by the white people who took over and stole this country. He literally represents the things that you seem to want to be rid of. Gtfo with your ignorant and blind allegiance. It was never yours (ours) to rightfully enjoy. I pray that you or anyone with your mentality are not stewards for any young minds.

    • So the Lord is in favour of racism, punishing the poor for being poor, arrogance, adultery,……………… and so much more. If this is really true, then the Lord must hate Christianity. He is making the USA the laughing stock of the rest of the world.

    • How sad! He doesn’t come close to Jesus Christ! He is Satan in the flesh! How dare you compare him to the Man who have compassion on ALL races!! Prayers that you truly get saved and have a relationship with the TRUE MESSIAH JESUS CHRIST!!

    • Trump isn't draining the swamp, Trump *is* the swamp.

Trump isn't 'kicking Satan out of America", Trump *is* Satan.

"Not all who say to me 'Lord, Lord' shall enter the kingdom of heaven."

The writer of this "Trump is King" letter doesn't know the least thing about Jesus of Nazareth, who walked on this planet 2 millennia ago. This misguided writer lies like Trump. Baldface lies. This misguided writer doesn't care.

    • You need to be locked up in a nuthouse. We will never allow a dictator to run this country. If there is a Satan his name is Donald Trump.

    • President for life….you are in the wrong place if you want the authoritarian policies a Trump for life presidency would bring. The hard core religious right is a danger to our democracy just as much as trump.. The only person he cares about is donald jtrump. If you kooks ..the ones who equate him.being sent by god shouldd read the constitution…we are not a theocracy…we are a democracy..freedom of RELIGION…freedom of SPEECH….and Freedom.from.g overnment interference in whatever our personal beliefs may
      be.
Letting a liar traitor have lifetime control would be disastrous… It could also lead to the second Civil war in America.. Those of us who think Trump is bad for our alread y great country has Group of delusiona l religious fanatics.

    • Oh my. What a frightening statement. I can’t begin to fathom where you come up with these beliefs, but Trump’s life has proven that he is not a man of God.

    • He isn't the saviour of proper syntax and spelling, obviously! You really need to learn to think for yourself, instead of spreading Facist Xianity!

  3. H V = “Not all evangelicals!”
    T I K = “Hold my holy water!”
Me = Hey H V maybe don’t come at the people telling you about the problem, and look right next to you at the glaring problem and try to fix it…

  4. Surely the point of the Isaiah 45 passage was that Cyrus the Great would permit a migration, not prevent one. Any other interpretation is a distortion of the text!

  5. Then Donald Trump took Christian Evangelists to a high place and showed them all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. "All this I will give you," he said, "If you will bow down and worship me."—And they did—

  6. As I am reading these comments about Trump serving for life and how is is viewed as more than what he is, I am greatly disturbed. Why are Christians thinking that someone proven to be a woman hater, a conman and a failed businessman, has any business being a leader of the United States? It has far reaching meanings when christians want to be led by someone like this. I can assure you, it would be a monumental mistake to allow him in the White House for the rest of this term, not to mention another. The United States was founded on the principles that no one religion should have preferential treatment over the next. To expound on the possibility that christianity should take over our government, is simply treasonous. You happen to live in a country that lets you worship as you wish, but when that worship is made mandatory for all citizens, you have made a terrorist threat that is intent on destroying our way of life. Go back to your churches and stay there. Obviously you do not understand the ramifications of your actions. Worship as you may but our government will never be taken hostage and made to conform to fatalists. Freedom does not extend only to the likes of christians. You should be proud to live in such a diverse nation as we are. You should understand that many people do not want any part of your christian religion. We are all different and we all have a place here to call home. No matter of religion or any other school of thought. I happen to understand the meanings of the sciences that explain the world. If you do not wish to incorporate these views into your life, our system of government allows for that. You may believe anything you wish and conversely, I may believe anything I see as worthy. Read the Constitution for yourselves and discover the true meanings and foundations for our country. It is not your bible.

  7. I was never interested in politics until DJT got elected by a MINORITY of Americans. He has desecrated the office like no other. I now feel strongly, in order to keep my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ sacred to humanity, that I must do everything within my power to destroy the influence of this Godless man and his followers.

    • No he did not. Trump received 62,980,160 votes or 46% of the popular vote.. Clinton received 65,845,063 or 48% of the popular vote. Third party candidates on the presidential ballot received 6,674,811 votes. The only majority of votes Trump received was in the Electoral College, which was how he won the election. A majority of voters did not vote for him.

  8. If God is in favor of Trump (a mere mortal in spite of your thinking), I certainly don't want anyone to ever associate me with being a *Christian ". It doesn't say much for your God is he endorses the type of behavior repeatedly displayed by this immoral excuse of a human.

  9. Anyone who believes this is no Christian. There is nothing good about Trump. He cares nothing for anything but himself.
