You Need To Consider The Possibility Your Religion Is Mythology

This post by Travis Haan originally appeared at The Wise Sloth.

There are at least 4,200 religions in the world today, and countless more have been lost to history. It’s obvious there’s a 0% chance all of them are the true word of God. Some thinkers have speculated that each religion is at least a little divinely inspired and holds a piece of the puzzle left to us by God to put together. But the only way to come to that conclusion is to ignore huge tracts of doctrine in each religion. Ultimately, none of them are compatible. If any religion is true, there’s only one.

This means at least over 6 billion people alive today believe in a religion that was written 100% by human beings and 0% dictated by the creator of the universe. A belief system written by human beings that has no bearing on the factual nature of reality is mythology. The cold, hard truth of reality is that the vast majority of the people alive today believe in mythology and dogmatically refuse to even consider the possibility that’s true. So if you believe in religion, there’s automatically a 99% chance you believe in mythology. If you refuse to question your beliefs, there’s no way for you to know if they’re true, which increases the chance that you believe in mythology to 99.9%. This number is increased to 99.99% if your religion contains any of the following:

1: Human sacrifices

2: Moral values that reflect the needs and wants of a specific primitive culture

3: Instructions to hurt, kill or look down on other people

4: Reasons to look down on yourself

5: A pyramid-shaped authority structure

6: Scientifically inaccurate statements

7: Magical beings, powers or events that no longer exist

Some people have speculated that it doesn’t matter what religion you believe in as long as you believe in something that gives you meaning, instructions and peace. But believing in something that isn’t real is the definition of insanity. It’s not okay to be insane just because you like it because it holds you and society back.

Believing in mythology is counterproductive if for no other reason than it’s a waste of time. It keeps you busy going through meaningless motions while ignoring real world issues that have real consequences to you and the rest of mankind. Your life and everyone else’s would be improved by you focusing on real problems.

To this, you might reply, “But how can we know how to live without religion?” Remember that most of the world doesn’t believe in religion; they believe in mythology. So the real question is, “How can we know how to live without mythology?” If mythology is just a belief system made up by humans, and you’ve spent your whole life living according to those rules, you already know the answer. We can make up our own ethics, and in fact, that’s what we’ve been doing all along. We just haven’t been honest with ourselves about it. If taking personal responsibility for your own ethics sounds scary or haphazard, consider that mythologies can contain horrible rules that can lead you to hurt yourself or others, which makes it all the more imperative you question your beliefs.

This is especially true if you absolutely insist on believing one of our religions is the divine truth. Everyone wants to believe that their religion is the right one, but at least 6 billion people are dead wrong in their faith. Statistically, you’re probably one of them. The only way you or anyone else can find the right religion is to scrutinize yours objectively. This may sound like heresy, but it’s probably not a coincidence that you were created with the capacity for reason, skepticism, doubt, and logic. For the billions of people who believe in mythology, it’s a necessity. If your religion can stand the test of truth, there’s no danger in putting yours to it. If your religion can’t stand the test of truth, objectivity is the only way you’ll ever free yourself.

Your quest for truth isn’t just about you. Most religions encourage you to convert nonbelievers, and even without actively proselytizing on the street corner, you passively send out the message that people should join your faith just by living according to it. If you believe in one of the religions that are mythology, you’re leading unwitting victims into a trap. If enough people in one area buy into mythology, one way or another, their beliefs are going to determine social norms and even laws. This has a harsh real-world impact on people who don’t believe in that particular brand of mythology. Another danger of spreading mythology is that some people will inevitably latch onto the most violent, oppressive, absurd rules within that belief system and use them to justifying hurting other people. So before you go spreading the good word, it’s imperative that you make sure it passes the most rigorous test of truth, not just for your sake but for all of ours.

    • Indeed there is, after I die, others will still be alive …..

      ….. unless …..

….. this reality is only a dream …..

      ….. my dream …..

….. if the dreamer dies, what of the dream?

    • Yes

Worms will live from the decomposition of your body.

Your “soul” is the result of the function of your brain as proved by changes in personality following a head trauma. Believing in the continuation of your thought process after death is nothing but delusion, wishful thinking.

  1. Believe as you will, however research the roots of Christianity. All is based on Pagan rites, rituals, and ways. Twisted and perverted to make them uniquely Christian. Then in the next step, Pagans and those that follow the new ways are condemned. So hypocritical. Many, many, many people, men, women, and children were murdered in the name of a god. Christianity is factually the most violent religion out there. In my opinion the most two faced, back, stabbing, judgemental one as well

    • Satan has infiltrated all aspects of society and religion and make people believe he does not exist you cannot accuse someone of something if they do not exist Catholics and Christians are mutually exclusive but Catholics claim to be Christians but do the opposite then people blame Christians when in fact they mean Catholics. Jesus/the word/holy spirit is the only representative of god on earth not the Pope, living in riches while the poor suffer. Research the roots of christianty from the word of god not catholic doctrine and history.

The first Catholics based the office of pope on misinterpretation to suit themselves. Jesus is the rock christianity is built on not Peter(supposedly the 1st Pope). Search "petra petros peter jesus"

      • Satan is quite literally the boogeyman. Adults should be ashamed to believe in such nonsense. Take responsibility for your own actions. Christians are like children, with the difference being that Christians kill and oppress in the name of their silly beliefs.

      • Apparently jeebus doesn’t believe in punctuation. It seems every retort from bible thumpers is a giant, run-on sentence.
If we could only swap religion for a proper education…

  2. ““Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell me, if you know so much.”
    ‭‭Job‬ ‭38
The beginning is the beginning no other (religion)
Can claim that? The word of God in the Bible is not a religion it’s Reality!
And if you disagree where’s you proof & and resources?

  3. Jehovah (English) is the only true God amd creator. He has his own chosen people that he deals with. Soon he end this wicked system and keep those he has chosen in his new system.
Dan 2:44 tells us he is setting up a government of his own with Christ as king. No more evil, sickness or death. John 5:28,29 yells us he will bring those inthe grave back to life and judge them by their work from then on. If no improvement then out they go. No one will ruin the earth again.

    • Jehovah, or YHWH, was a minor deity of a small band of goat herders. He was at first a weak god, subservient to El. So YHWH is quite literally a deity that was part of a wide pantheon of other gods. The Hebrews worshiped a bunch of different gods aside from Yahweh, including El, Asherah and Baal. Over time the people began to conflate Yahweh with other god, like El who was said to have lived on a mountain. No coincidence then that the fictional Moses went to meet the fictional Yahweh on top of a mountain during the fictional Exodus. The process of getting from dozens of deities to one single omnipotent God was a long one, bottom-up and top-bottom, but it shows clearly that Yahweh is no different from any of the thousands of other gods, from Zeus to Shiva to Ra to the gods of Babylon or the deities of the people who live in remote rain forests today. Yahweh is nothing but a deity of a minor, iron-age peoples. Time for grown ups to move past this superstitious garbage.

Wikipedia has a great summery of how Yahweh evolved over time.

  4. In terms of Richard Dawkins' memetics theory, it should be brought out that the three current patriarchal religions are over a thousand years old and have survived only because they keep adding new members via a tight, well controlled family structure.
Divorce, adultery and birth control are all sinful in the worst order.

Of the thousands of religions of history, now extinct, the problem was a failure to keep adding new members. Did you ever meet a Christian that didn't want to proselytize you? The reason gays are “abomination” is that they don't reproduce and make a convenient scapegoat.

  5. Haha people are quoting the bible as their source and asking people to source their material for things that are factual and in reality. Lol

  6. Good article. Should read to free your ind from religious garbage and make your brain more critical, scientific and logical!

  7. I agree with a few posters above. Mythology is quite different from the Abrahamic religions. Polytheistic mythologies were rooted in nature. The gods represented various natural phenomena and the worship of these gods brought people in close contact with nature, made them good stewards of it. The abstract monotheistic faiths in the Abrahamic tradition have none of this. God is removed outside of reality, he represents nothing tangible or of this world. The Abrahamic faiths teach people to despise the world, despise reality, yearn for life after death. This has tangible consequences, one being that it leads to a contempt for the natural world, contempt for life and contempt for one's own realness. These religions make people yearn for death, and are therefore religions of death. Which is why they dwarf all others in terms of the bloodshed they have caused.

  8. Interesting. However, the statistical arguments are a bit off. If one of the 4000+ religions holds a great percentage of the population (say 10% or 20%) and IS the true religion, then the chances of a person to be holding on to the true one isn’t 1%.
Most religions aren’t THAT complicated. So if the litmus test of “the word of God” is infallibility, then you stack the books, go through them and discard as soon as you find ONE mistake, incongruence or false statement. Its not THAT hard. What IS hard is to go through all the talk and try to sift. Because there’s WAY more “holy” people than “holy” books.

  9. To be a little snarky, with these uppercase proper nouns.

The First Fruits of the resurrection; the Lord of the constellations, He the Word was with God-the uncaused First Cause at the Creation; the God–man, the Son, Who humbled Himself to nurse mother's milk like us.

The lowercase 'g' – gods of Buddhism / Hinduism, the Ancient Greeks / Roman Mithraism, Jainism, the Norse pantheon, Shintoism, and animistic religions; or, a messiah in Judaism.

(quality classical, btw) The Norse mountain-thunder god, Thor; https://youtu.be/kLp_Hh6DKWc.

  10. If your religion tends to be all about you and yours, that is further evidence that it is mythology. I mean, a creator of every worm and microbe and rock, much less the whole universe — shouldn't be overly concerned with your sub-culture of the world more than everything else. And He should certainly not care whether you believe or worship Him.

  11. Ask Your Pastor if they signed a 501C3* This is a tax exemption along with other Federal Rules a Religious Organization must follow; if signed. These Pastors are agreeing to shepherd their Sheep to Fema Camps.

  12. I really have to question the motive as well of the mindset of an atheist.

I mean you speak from ignorance. I mean what do you really know?

A Universe exists. Physics is causing it to revolve. Its expanding. And has been surviving for millions upon millions of years.

    All by chance Mr Atheist?

We see the pattern on earth is something give birth or create something else.

Ive never witnessed nothing creating something have you?

We solve this mystery of how the universe got here because we believe that God always existed and so again the pattern on earth remains. Something creates something. In this case God created everything else.

Or you can demonstrate nothing creating something if you want.

42% of America believes in ghosts.

Ghosts are one of the biggest themes of the bible.

So i see that is more than enough evidence that the bible is in fact true and more than just a mythology.

Actually we believe those ghosts or Spirits are behind your atheism.

Just so you know…..theres 318 million people in america.

42% would be well over 140 million.

    That includes atheists!!

This is why soooo many atheists are now calling themselves “SPIRITUAL”

the word spiritual means you believe in something other than this world. Particularly other beings from other dimensions. Ghosts

    • If something cannot come from nothing, then how did God come into existence? If he has always been around, then why can't the universe have always been around? And even if there is a god or gods, how do you know that it's the Christian one? Besides which, you clearly do need to question the atheistic mindset, because you don't understand it. You are the one making the claim. Atheists are not making any claims themselves, they are merely disbelieving in your claim. The burden of proof rests upon you, and you have yet to provide any proof.
