White Evangelicals See Trump As ‘Honest’ And ‘Morally Upstanding’

Close to two-thirds of white evangelicals say that President Trump is “honest” and “morally upstanding”.

NPR reports:

White evangelicals in the United States, the core of President Donald Trump’s political base, have far more positive views of his personal conduct and character than other U.S. adults.

By a nearly 2-to-1 margin, white evangelicals are more likely than other Americans to say the terms “morally upstanding” and “honest” describe Trump at least “fairly well,” according to a new survey from the Pew Research Center.

The evangelical assessment does come with some reservations. Only about 15% of white evangelicals, for example, say “morally upstanding” describes Trump “very well,” while another 45% say the term applies to Trump “fairly well.” Two-thirds of U.S. adults as a whole say that characterization fits him “not too well” or “not at all well.”

As NPR noted in its analysis of the poll, the high marks among the religious group could have some other motivations:

One explanation for white evangelicals’ attachment to Trump is that they see him as a political ally,” the report noted. “The Pew survey found that 63% of white evangelical Protestants believe their side has been ‘winning politically’ under the Trump presidency. That’s a dramatic turnaround from 2016, when less than one in four white evangelicals saw themselves as on the winning side.

White evangelical Protestants are not alone in their admiration of Trump, the survey found.

For example, roughly two-thirds of white Catholics say the phrase “fights for what I believe in” describes Trump very well or fairly well, and 68% of white Catholics say “intelligent” is a fairly or very good descriptor of Trump. Similar shares of white Protestants who are not born-again or evangelical Christians say the same. And more than half of people in both groups say they agree with Trump on many, nearly all or all of the important issues facing the country.

  1. Die hard religious types disgust me. They are a threat to humanity and decency so far contained by secular law.
Their recent aggressive push for control is a clear sign of desperation. If their god was truly loving, we would be flocking to it. Problem is it doesn't exist. Instead they replace its purported existence with hate, division murder and suffering.
Pathetic imbeciles, the lot of them.

  2. If it helps people in the States to know the vast majority of Christians I know in the UK are aghast that such a man garners so much support and adoration when virtually every day he says or does something very public which is totally contrary to the recorded teachings of Jesus. One example, the Bible says to consider (think upon, defer to) others better than ourselves i.e. live for others interests before our own. Trump would not think twice about putting a bullet in anyone who stands in his way if he thought he could get away with it.

I am so deeply concerned for the upcoming election for your country. Even if Biden, on election Day, looks like he will win, I cannot see Trump not doing his utmost to tip the result in his favour including using criminal means.

I genuinely do not think he thinks in terms of right and wrong in an ethical sense. I believe he simply sees things as serving his interests or not. I’m fairly sure that’s what a textbook sociopath is.

Whether the Bible I believe in is fairy tales or not, please don’t believe that Christians all over the world feel in any way like these Trump fanatics.

  3. Ty that DOES make me feel better. I actually grew up as an evangelical and until recently consider self one. My wife and I however cannot take it anymore we have switched Faith‘s we are going to be Baptist or some non-evangelical form of Christianity from now on.

  4. Baptist , sounds terriblle also, so medieval and orthodox. why not become a busddhist or atheist secualr with good moral values.? If god wxista how come there are so many diffr erent ones in evry culture? who made god? you might as well just believe in mother nature as she has created everything …and we at least have proof of that. We have no proof of some supernatural alien that honeslty does not seem to give a hoot about us ,or why would he create such evil people like trump?
