Church and State

Like all of us except the conspirators, I have been stunned by the events of January 6th and its subsequent developments. As I wrote in my January 9th op ed:
First let me say that a message needs strongly made about what happened on January 6th.
Secondly, while what happened was terrible, this historic occurrence was sadly required to bring more Americans to the realization of what Trump caused with his conduct.
Had Trump left before Wednesday’s example his call to Georgia’s Atty General demanding him to “find the votes” to overturn Biden’s November 3rd win might have been forgotten by too many and as was blatantly disregarded and used for political gain by Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley.
Please don’t give me that lame excuse that we are out of time for action now so why bother!!
If the GOP wants to go the way of the WHIGS in the 1850 lead up to the Civil War, let them resist Trump’s total censure!
Where has Trump left America after packing the Supreme Court and 4 years of dangerous mismanagement?
I say in luck if we are now able to right our ship of state because of fully recognizing the effect of two unforeseen events.
- The horrible pandemic for which our amazing private sector has produced vaccines in record time.
- The attack Trump fostered and precipitated on our Capitol on January 6th.
Otherwise, horrible as those events were and still are, Trump’s reelection this past November 3rd would have been assured and the possible end to our constitutional democracy could have gotten so well advanced that we could not have recovered.
The psychosis of today’s America in letting Trump not be convicted of impeachable behavior could come as it did with Germany at about the time of my birth in 1931 from many sources some beautifully described in the attached Scientific American article which you can read here.

A large number of elected members of the Republican Party don’t want to admit their mistake with Trump as many feel he was good for business.
In fact as this seminal debate on impeachment occurred on January 13th in the House, the CNBC investment channel was far more engaged in how stocks were heading than whether Trump would continue to dominate the Republican future.
Everyone in Congress admits that the Capitol invasion was bad but Trump initially seemed to get a pass on culpability from far too many Republicans in both houses.
Is it greed or reach for power such as Cruz appears to have sought?
Did not getting re-elected move so many? Doubtless.
But also many comments being expressed now and confirmed by the FBI was their fear of being physically endangered by the kind of far right leaders of the Capitol invasion that urged their supporters to hang Pence or murder Pelosi!
By the way, this abject failure to early on call out Hitler by the moderates of that time was what ultimately brought the Third Reich to full power.
Trump needs to be called to harsh account now. His delay on recognizing COVID was a minor mistake compared to what is brewing if his lying Roger Stone origins as so powerfully depicted in the Tuesday January 12th Frontline program on WETA.
I was shocked that the Washington Post and other reputable media did not mention Frontline’s searing accounting of how lying got Trump elected. You can find that program here.

So after all these factual disclosures, we still have over 100 Republican members of the US House and who knows how many in the Senate, willing to not impeach a traitor to our Republic.
Why, obviously because of their fear of personal harm or their political future, both sad and dangerous for our future.
I am a fervent backer of our two party system, but the only way the Republican Party can regain its balance is the get the stench of Trump off its back. I am not a Mitch McConnell fan, but his early recognition of Trump’s impact on his party has left the door open for the less brave of his tribe when impeachment surfaces again either immediately or after Biden has a chance to get his administration off to a needed start.
The reaction of big business which was happy to take Trump’s goodies is not clear; they see the profit loss danger of not getting rid of him. His brand is going to symbolize the tyranny of his totally self interested objectives and his failure to admit culpability for his clearly traitorous behavior.
Watch as this behavior gains more and more recognition from Republicans on the right, whose behavior is clearly motivated at least partially by racism as Don Lemon so clearly explains on his CNN 11PM talk show.
Wonder what will happen on January 20th in all the 50 state capitals?
