The Vatican has told a Spanish bishop that transsexuals cannot be godparents after he asked for a formal answer on the matter, the cleric in the diocese of Cadiz and Ceuta said.

Bishop Rafael Zornoza Boy said the Vatican’s doctrinal arm replied that transsexuals “publicly show an attitude contrary to the moral requirement to resolve one’s sexual identity problem according to the truth of one’s sex”.

In a statement on his diocese’s website, Zornoza Boy said: “Pope Francis has effectively said on several occasions, in line with church teaching, that this behaviour is against man’s nature.”

The church “wants to help everyone in their own situation with a compassionate heart, but without denying the truth it preaches,” the bishop added.

Zornoza Boy said he made the query to the congregation for the doctrine of the faith because of confusion among the faithful, and the publicity given to the complicated subject.

An Italian conservative Catholic blog, Rorate Caeli, said the issue was first raised by a transsexual, born a woman, who had asked to be godfather to his nephew.

In its response to Zornoza Boy, the Vatican said its stance on transsexual godparents “should not be seen as discrimination”.

    1. There is so much medical information available now that supports transgender people. The National Institute of Health provides plenty of documentation. The Church relies on archaic thoughts and beliefs from a time when science and medicine were far more primitive. So sad that they choose to cling to dated knowledge. Perhaps they would be better able to understand the issues they face with their own Priests and not turn them out because of a sexual preference they were born with.

    2. There is so much I like, perhaps even love, about the Catholic Church and then this comes along. Granted, I doubt thatanyoneneeds meto be a godparent, but this still hurts…

    3. It seems to me that this man's belief is the perfect intellectual vehicle for intolerance and bigotry to descend into persecution, violence and eventually murder and war.
His bigotry based upon HIS faith and HIS beliefs runs dangerously parallel to the bigotry, intolerance and hate that finds such fertile nourishment in the religious hatefulness and intolerance that emanates from Islam.

It's mostly to do with their bigoted beliefs, which, when taken to their brutal finalities, degenerate into – 'I'm right – your dead!'

I'm relieved I finally escaped from a childhood of brutal religious and secular abuse but it took the adult tools of atheism and secular rationality to help me make the ascent; mostly to finally overcome my embedded, childhood fears and superstitions.
