Secretary of State Mike Pompeo: “My first calling is to my Savior”

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo joined a conference call with conservative pastors hosted by the Family Research Council’s Tony Perkins last month, reports Right Wing Watch’s Peter Montgomery.

Pompeo told the pastors that he is working on two big projects: the high-level international conferences he has hosted to promote worldwide religious liberty, and the Commission on Unalienable Rights. The Commission on Unalienable Rights is worrying civil rights advocates but generating excitement among anti-LGBTQ Christian-right groups.

Pompeo has been a Christian-right favourite since his time in the House of Representatives. According to Montgomery, “Pompeo has helped open doors in other countries to allow Ralph Drollinger, who runs Bible studies for members of Trump’s cabinet and conservative members of Congress, to take his fundamentalist ideology into the upper echelons of other governments, where he teaches public officials that the Bible requires them to support a range of right-wing public policies.”

Pompeo’s remarks during the conference call strongly suggest that he is ignoring the tenet of separation of church and state to preach the gospel to foreign leaders:

I’ve been unabashed in my role as Secretary of State to talk about the fact that I swore an oath to the Constitution, but that my first calling is to my Savior. And I’ve made that something that I tell world leaders, whether I’m with President Sisi in Egypt or whomever, whatever faith they may be of or of no faith. And we’ve watched some of us be called out for that, to think that, to say that we don’t care about science, that we don’t care about the rule of law, all the things that I know we all care so deeply about.

My relationship with pastors across America, with Tony and all of you, reminds me of the important reason that I believe the Lord put me in this place to have this opportunity to make religious freedom such an important part of what this administration is doing.

  1. We were formed on separation of church and state. This is so dangerous. We might as well have Sharia Law. Are we going to be arrested for not going to church? For not titheing? For disobeying our parents?

    • have you read your comment it makes little sense……the first ammendment you selectivly quote also says that the Government can't interfere witjh a persons beliefs of restrict their practice of their religion . the seperation of church and state is to keep government from interfering in religion not the other way around.

    • No his title is Mr President ……some of us have the ability to be rational and know the laws of the land and not get caught up in the petty rhetoric and trying to make lies into truths

  2. Praise God that we have Godly men in the government like Pomeo and the Vice President, that will put a restraint on corruption. Those who would rather have liberal unbelieving men and women in government positions are inviting Satan himself to take rule. If God is in control we have a great mighty hand to protect us and our country. If God is not in the picture then chaos and murder and all kinds of destructive behavior will be rampant in our society. President Trump made promises and delivered. If some hatful people want to look at him as using evangelicals for votes, then that’s very ok, because, though he is a not a pastor, he stands for the same beliefs this country was built on. I m an evangelical. I have a voice and rights of a citizen. I fully support President Trump. Evangelicals have great voting numbers. No one can discard that

    • Analogically, Satan has been working in Christianity since the beginning of Christian history. People and organizations can make all the claims they want but the truth and the proof are in the performance record or history. The most Satanic belief in Christianity is the claim that non-Christians will go to an afterlife hell for eternity. It takes a cold heart to be okay with this belief. Many Christians throughout history have taken it upon themselves to bring hell on early to the non-Christians, such as the Inquisition, the Holocaust, and the horrifying Passion Plays torture and murder of whole villages of Jews by Christian mobs. The U.S.A. has always been overwhelmingly Christian in population. But how you think that is a good thing is mystifying and defy's logic. We enslaved, tortured, murdered, and forced Christianity on millions of Africans. That is clearly Satanic. The list is too long to mention all of the sins of Christianity. So, why would we want Christian Satanists running our government?
