A conservative Roman Catholic cardinal claims Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden should not receive Communion because his views on abortion are at sharp odds with Vatican teaching. Catholic News Agency reports:

Cardinal Raymond Burke, a canon lawyer and formerly the prefect of the Church’s highest court, has said that Catholic politicians supporting abortion should not receive Holy Communion, including pro-choice Catholic presidential candidate Joe Biden.

Biden “is not a Catholic in good standing and he should not approach to receive Holy Communion,” Burke said in an Aug. 31 interview with Thomas McKenna, who as head of an organization called Catholic Action for Faith and Family periodically conducts interviews with the cardinal.

Newsweek reports:

The cardinal said his comments about Biden were not meant to be an overtly political statement. But he also said voting for Biden while he remained pro-choice would be “ridiculous.”

“I don’t intend to get involved in the recommending any candidate for office, but simply to state that a Catholic may not support abortion in any shape or form,” he said, “because it is one of the most grievous sins against human life, and has always been considered to be intrinsically evil. And therefore to support the act is a mortal sin.”

“I don’t know why Catholics who are involved in politics can’t get this straight in their heads,” said Burke.

  1. Why is a cardinal contradicting the Pope? Because Pope Francis clearly said that Catholics shouldn't be one issue voters and should vote for people who support more social justice initiatives overall, even if that person is pro-choice.

  2. This is one of the reasons I HATE religion. Ultimately, this is meaningless. His fairy tales and “communion” are a ridiculous and infantile preoccupation that humanity as a species needs to stop already. We created religions to try to explain things we didn’t understand. Then came science. We no longer need fairy tales to explain the mysteries of the universe. Put the blankie away, humanity. It is time to grow up. Religion is responsible for vast amounts of torture, misery, lies, oppression, hatred, and countless millions of murders.
Keep your communion, you fool. You need it mire than I do.

  3. Firstly – separation of church and state. Should you want to involve yourself in politics, cardinal, then please pay your tithe (aka taxes)
Secondly – I may actually give a modicum of interest in your opinion once you've cleaned up your own church's failings (aka pedophilia amongst other ongoing atrocities)
Thirdly – it is this kind of all-or-nothing do-what-I-tell-you mentality that led me to leave the Catholic church and, ultimately, religion in its entirety.

  4. Catholic Church.
If there are no abortions, exactly who is going to provide parenting duties to all these unwanted children ??

And then in their teens, having no father figure, turn to crime. Why should there be victims of these crimes.

The Catholic Church must explain who is going to morally and financially these kids….
