Church and State

One vital element I neglected to mention in my last OpEd as fundamental to taking action in reducing world population is the threat of rampant tribalism!

In no way was I suggesting that any single group be featured to be reduced in number in voluntary steps which governments and private institutions might take to offer all people voluntary means to have the number of children they desired. Unlike the GOP now seeking to make voting harder for minorities, I want to make everyone’s decisions about parenting totally voluntary and accessible.
My main point was to make sure that all people understand that the present number of human consumers of our finite planet’s limited resources had already exceeded sustainable limits as scientific evidence has made clear.
This then is what calls upon the world’s major stronghold of democracy, the USA, to strengthen itself and encourage others to recognize the threat presented by excess human numbers and to support benign non mandatory actions to offer free family planning services to all who seek them.
Quick calculations can confirm that the cost of providing such options compared to the present cost of military resources is extremely small.
Therefore recognizing the overwhelming population problem now becomes vital if we are to solve it with the least disruption possible.
And who better to lead such an immense effort than the USA?
The facts as so powerfully presented by Steven Johnson in his May 2nd NY Times Magazine article and the work of other credible scientists for decades about planetary limits seem to me to coalesce as the perfect example around the global pandemic now assaulting all humanity. In treating this threat, we learn the interconnected nature of all our human lives! You can reread my last OpEd and Johnson’s article here.
Since the end of the 1918 flu pandemic, an astonishing thing has happened: the average human life span has doubled.
How did this great doubling happen? In our special issue on life expectancy, @stevenbjohnson explains what it took. https://t.co/mjls1cz7JL

Thus we now must see sustainable survival for all creatures and the natural resources that sustain us and globally must recognize the similarity of all tribes as having needs which must be achieved if we humans are to survive in relative peace and prosperity.
