The Sunday August 7 page one New York Times story entitled “Catholic Faith Makes Abortion Tricky for Biden”.

Great concern is expressed in this piece, even by the Catholic NGO Catholics For Choice, that Biden’s heretofore ambivalence on abortion makes him problematic as a primary leader is what will be a vicious battle to revive Roe, the only Constitutional right ever withdrawn in our history.

It may well be true that other voices such as Catholics for Choice, NARAL and Planned Parenthood may lead the assault on the utterly evil use of religion to try to extinguish women’s access to safe abortions!

Read the Times piece here.

But as we have seen, Trump’s corrupt use of the world’s most powerful bully pulpit has sown seeds of discord against these religious zealot Justices and their Roe decision that will haunt the reputation of our highest court for decades.

Thus, again I am suggesting here that using the great power of his bully pulpit, Biden could very well be the perfect avatar to help restore this public health service so abruptly withdrawn by religious fiat.

Read here the definitions of Avatar and bully pulpit.

An embodiment or manifestation, as of a quality or concept: “Reagan was at his strongest as the avatar of American consensus, peddling a sunny normalcy, a happy-go-lucky and ultimately accommodating attitude” (Gil Troy).

Hope the usual NGO advocates of choice will not miss the chance to use this Catholic President as example of how wrong the Roe decision was.

Please note that after the Roe decision on 6/24/22, Biden immediately made a conclusive statement against what the Court had done.

His remarks you can read here.

But I strongly suggest you LISTEN to his obvious sincerity and dismay at Roe’s demise. You can easily find the videos of Biden giving his speech as every main media TV outlet in the US carried it. Don’t know how Biden could have made a stronger statement.

The August 7th Times article I mention above which says Biden is uncomfortable using the word “abortion” ignores his complete and heartfelt denunciation of the Court’s decision on June 24th the day of the decision.

Moreover, Biden’s statement gives listeners a complete list of the even broader adverse ramifications of the Roe decision, which concern potential intrusions into every citizen’s personal privacy and freedom, as well as reminding us that the Justices appointed to the Court before Trump were candidates nominated by both parties.

That Biden threw down the gauntlet—for all of us to take up the challenge—to vote in this midterm election. If too many of us fail to understand that our democracy is on the line, the Republican takeover of Congress will be a huge defeat for our democracy!

Those motivated to vote for the Trump GOP because of temporary inflation or the now declining price of gasoline, should look at the bravery of those fighting for their freedom in Ukraine.

Also, we should compare those transitory reasons alongside Trump’s major crime of trying to stop the transfer of power by illegally engineering a coup.

Looking ahead, we know Trump and his supporters which include the convicted liar and dangerous agitator Alex Jones and the Proud Boys and most shockingly the 70 percent of seated House Republicans who accept or use his support despite his continued use of his “Big Steal” lie will surely try to consolidate power again in 2024.

So, Roe’s demise is the most obvious symbol of what these GOP authoritarianists stand for. But only one of many such actions such as restricting our voting rights.

The August 2nd decision of voters in conservative Kansas to keep women’s Constitutional rights to abortion could be the boost needed to make Roe a major factor in November.
