Abortion Rights Reform Now Becomes The Key Symbol For Taking The Political Actions Necessary To Retain Our Democracy

The illuminating front-page December 15th Washington Post story by Caroline Kitchener entitled “Abortion foes aim to cut pill access: Advocates want jail trafficking that flouts strict post-Roe laws” which confirms my views entirely!

This issue becomes central to the survival of personal freedom in our democracy because of its vital connection and relationship with other critical issues needing urgent political action. Will historians thank the Supreme Court for this wakeup call against our fundamental human rights. It will be up to us.

Watching the current Netflix series Harry and Meghan, one is not surprised to see the traditional straight jacket of Palace protocol result in rebellion as occurred when King Edward abdicated in 1936 to marry Wallace Simpson, a American divorcee.

My point is the fact that the British love the pomp and circumstance of their royals and are willing to pay substantial tax dollars to keep them performing.

The Royals themselves react harshly to any of their number who would reject this mutual deal of lavish living tyranny!

What will happen to the UK Royals? Does their popularity with their citizens carry this charade forward? Is it good for UK’s unity?

Notice in the Netflix Elizabeth Coronation scene that the archbishop’s anointment of Elizabeth and her acquiesce to the will of Church of England confirms that in the UK church and state are not separated as we were under our Constitution until Supreme Court’s decision on Dobbs on June 24th! We were separated, but no longer!

Our basic human rights are under increasing siege as the fantasy of far right wing Roman Catholic religionists are using their power to gain political power with fervent attacks abortion choice to control women.

It’s especially ironic since one of the two leaders of the successful campaign to get woman the right to vote Susan B Antony’s name is now being used by the anti-choice movement, saying Anthony was anti-choice, a view widely disputed by many historians.

Mistakes die hard as those who make them often leave heirs to repeat them.

In the Navy during the Korean War, I felt our Korean intervention was justified and so did the many nations who joined us.

But as President Eisenhower warned us to “beware the military, industrial complex” we fell into Vietnam and Iraq to let our military play with our expensive weapons made by happy US citizens for good wages.

Not that defense again USSR and others wasn’t needed, but for example North Korean leader Ho Chi Minh admittedly a Marxist who would have been no threat to us, was used to inflame our fear of communism to engulf us in a destructive war which we lost but not before inflicting huge pain on both sides.

We then subsequently made the same mistake by invading Iraq which continues to haunt us, as we empowered Iran.

As Bert Lance, President Carter’s Director of the Office of Management and Budget, opined “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” which could apply in retrospect to these remote wars we could have avoided and lived with if Ike’s advice had been heeded.

Now back to the issue of abortion choice. We seem to be unable to skip stupid wars. Just as UK keeps church and state together, the religious Dobbs decision now creates a completely unnecessary political schism between our major parties which Roe partly obscured for almost 50 years.

During those years the cancerous political tyranny festered in the minds of religious conservatives until the utter hypocrisy of Trump allowed him to appoint 3 new justices who were religious zealots like the other zealot Justice Clarence Thomas. This imbalance of ideologues could haunt us for years.

Now the abortion issue symbolizes whether our U.S. democracy will turn to humanity or the attempted grasp by tyrants as putting restrictions on birth control pills, forbidding women the right to personal travel to obtain an abortion, attempts to limit minority voting rights, not adequately funding education for minorities and other racist ploys just to name a few of the possible attacks from the hard right wingers.

Such continued attacks will be funded and fostered by ideologists ologists such as Leonard Leo who has access to billions of unrestricted monies to buy fealty to the legal views of the Federalist Society and others who embrace Constitutional Originalism, replacement theory and encourage the fears of the MAGA adherents about whites being replaced by minorities both those born and immigrants.

Thus, as I have argued before, our Second Civil War is in progress. Now that the facts are being aired extensively most of us citizens of all political views better be listening and learning so key decisions such as free choice for abortion gets done right and sooner, not in 72 years as it took women to get the right to vote..

What does Right on Roe mean? We need a new US national law which forbids any restrictions to women’s rights to obtain abortions anywhere or anytime!
