This very troubling assault on the key buildings in Brazil’s capitol, Brasilia greatly concerned me as my niece and her husband are longtime residents of Brasilia, so I immediately contacted her. I asked this question. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is not ousted but what can you tell us.
Here is her January 9th email reply:
Hi Uncle Don,
Despite the unprecedented vandalism and immeasurable destruction, the attempted coup failed. Since last night the government has regained control of the institutions and that very night took into custody around 400 of the rioters who were imprisoned.
We believe President Lula will come out of this even stronger as polls show that 90% of the population is against what happened.
Investigations and time will show who facilitated these terrorist actions.
As the NYTimes reported:
For the past 10 weeks, supporters of the ousted far-right President Jair Bolsonaro had camped outside Brazilian Army headquarters, demanding that the military overturn October’s presidential election. And for the past 10 weeks, the protesters faced little resistance from the government.
Then, on Sunday, many of the camp’s inhabitants left their tents in Brasília, the nation’s capital, drove a few miles away and, joining hundreds of other protesters, stormed Congress, the Supreme Court and the presidential offices.
Millions of Brazilians showed up to the polls last year and rejected Bolsonaro's authoritarianism. His supporters who perpetrated this attack must be brought to justice. The US will continue to support @LulaOficial’s democratically-elected government.https://t.co/Y35QLyEEAJ

What is so obvious and scary is that the defeated (albeit by a narrow margin) immediate past President Bolsonaro clearly imitated Trump almost to the same date as Trump’s January 6h coup attempt by doing his attempted coup on January 8th. His regular contacts with Trump must have been instructive!
The toxicity of what Trump started with his carefully orchestrated insurrection needs immediate and heavy doses of reaction. Glad Biden and others weighed into with the verbal support for Lula.
The subsequent arrest of those Brazilian police officials who should have stopped the violence is heartening and hopefully an example for other countries in what to look for if intelligence suggest insurrection may be in prospect.
Being in Florida in a hospital when this coup attempt occurred should not in any way obscure the chance to change Bolsonaro as the clear instigator in change. Bolsonaro will be investigated; read here.

So far, our system of justice has treated Trump with so much leeway he may get away with this capital coup offense (pun intended), but if he does, it increases the likelihood of future attempts to change election results in the USA and many other places.
For this epidemic we need strong vaccines as so far seems to be the case with lesser January 6th felons who broke into the Capitol, but the upper level felons are untouched except for a minor sentence for Steve Bannon.
How far will this dangerous anti democratic spread around the world?
