In 1931 the year of my birth in Chicago, a conviction occurred which has ever after been remembered in which America’s leading gangster Al Capone was sentenced to 11 years for blatant income tax evasion.
Earlier on the day he was convicted he had boasted ‘They Can’t Collect Legal Taxes from Illegal Money’.
You can read how Alphonse Gabriel Capone, who allegedly committed numerous felonies was put away for a long time for a crime which was a comparatively lessor matter.
Read the fascinating full story here which, while providing some measure of justice, was far from sufficient based on his humongous crimes. Capone, once the most feared man in America, died of venereal disease in prison on January 25, 1947, at the age of 48.
Tax fraud took down the 20th century’s greatest gangster.
It may now take down the greatest gangster of the 21st. https://t.co/iiGyV1tBjj

I have always been intrigued by his story as I was born in a Chicago suburb and my father was working as a Chicago municipal bond salesman and heard many stories circulating about mafioso crime at that time.
Obviously, news of release of Trump’s tax returns from 2016 to 2021 raise many questions. In responding to this release, this allowed Trump to retreat to his standard ploy of casting himself as a victim.
His GOP allies promptly promised retribution for this release which Trump has been fighting with his lawyers for years against their release despite the behavior other Presidents who have made their returns available. Why not if you have nothing to hide?
Many tax experts have already raised questions about his returns, which are highlighted in the attached NY Times article here.
As the Times said, “Trump fought for years to keep private his returns!”
Read here about these returns.

Perhaps the most shocking news is the failure of the IRS to audit Trump’s returns. As a long time, taxpayer who has submitted meticulously conservative returns, I am sure many others are as offended as I am with this oversight and the preferential treatment Trump received!
As the Atlantic magazine says, “The IRS Really, Really Should Have Audited Trump. The failure to do so is outrageous and needs to be investigated.”
Read The Atlantic piece here.
NEW: Perhaps as astonishing as anything we’ll find in Donald Trump’s tax returns is that the IRS didn’t even begin auditing them as required by its rules for two plus years. This is outrageous and must be investigated. I explain in @TheAtlantic. https://t.co/LsR6fKv78B

This conjures up an ironic comparison between Capone’s tax case vs his far worse crimes and Trump’s possible conviction for masterminding an insurrection to keep Biden from assuming the presidency vs his possible extensive income tax evasion!
Will Trump get convicted for this unique major assault on our democracy or the many other lesser crimes he is charged with?
