Remember, Bans on Abortions Means Bans On Safe Abortions!

One of the most egregiously obscene manipulations of truth I have recently read was the January 19th Washington Post opinion column by Marc A. Thiessen entitled “Kavanaugh Is Owed A Debt Of Gratitude”.

Read that op ed here.

In publishing this op ed I appreciate the Post’s proving its willingness to publish counter views, but was appalled at the brazen option favoring tyranny by this religious partisan!

The author’s main argument relies on the long held religious bias for saving fetal tissue by giving women’s privacy and reproductive rights to the same kind of politicians at the state level who embraced slavery since 1607 as the means to control human lives.

The author traces the history of how we came to the sad pass of Dobbs because of then Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s refusal to allow Obama’s nomination of Merrick Garland to proceed because it was too close to the end of Obama’s term as President.

Read here about McConnell’s later his hypocrisy in selecting a successor to the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

This then enabled the hypocritical political motivation of the philander Donald Trump to appoint 3 religious zealots to the Supreme Court and kill Roe/Casey on June 24, 2022.

Like FDR’s famous phase this was a decision that will live in infamy like the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941!

Let’s be very clear about the xenophobia involved in the Dobbs decision. Hatred of women’s rights like the repression of women in Afghanistan and many other authoritarian countries was made appealing to the misguided supporters of religious slavery by showing gory pictures of fetal mishaps caused by the very absence of safe legal abortions at any point in any pregnancy as a decision to be made solely up to the pregnant woman and her MD or other safe providers.

These same zealots murdered doctors and nurses and intimidated patients.

So as Mr. Thiessen’s headline suggests “As the March for Life returns, we owe Brett Kavanaugh a debt of gratitude”.

Perhaps you will want to shake Brett the lady abuser’s hand should the opportunity arise. Some years ago, I had the honor of shaking hands with the recently retired Supreme Court Justice Stephen. I complimented him on his answer to the Senate interrogation committee at the time of his nomination about his view of abortion. He said, “That’s settled law.”

However, the only partially functioning of Roe by the Supreme Court’s 1973 Blackman decision was not sufficiently clear to us non-zealots that the decision was a secular decision not to be upset by religious views.

To repeat: As a film called “Whose Choice?” I helped produce on the religious basis for legalization of choice which you can view on this website, banning abortion only means banning safe abortions.

Liberal Catholic President Joe Biden is doing all he can to lessen the grevious impact of Dobbs. There is much Biden can now do to ameliorate the impacdt of Dobbs, as explained by the excellent column which appeared in the Post on the same date as Thiessen’s, entitled “How the Biden administration can fight for women’s freedom” by Jennifer Rubin which you can read in full here.

Now as the debates begin about 2024 elections, I argue there are two issues that most urgently need to be addressed, abortion choice (as heading the list of incursions on our freedoms) and a legal solution to the immigration problem, this latter issue long ignored by both parties.

The powerful 1850’s Know Nothing party collapsed in 1860 with the onset of the Civil War. A second Civil War is now underway here.

The GOP is falsely and busily selling freedom as it seeks to limit secular human rights to choose abortion, to voting rights in many states, to LGBTQ rights, to encourage racism, to establish Christian nationalism, to promote the false doctrine of replacement, and to drastically curb government financing of vital social spending for those at the wrong end of the dangerously wide gap between the rich and poor.

Will enough of us understand the difference between real democracy and hooded authoritarianism? The jury is out!
