When pre-Civil War slavery was in full flower in the South and tolerated for commercial reasons in the North, southern slave owners zealously kept their slaves from education—such as learning to read and write.
Now, comparing then with such irony, it is the GOP, the party of Lincoln trying to suppress students from knowing this tragic history.

Even as lessons on Black history draw complaints from Republican governors, who argue the instruction is ideological, several blue states are moving in the opposite direction and setting up a uniquely American division over how we teach our past.https://t.co/7oZK0OgKJy

Then we hear from Marjorie Taylor Greene, the far-right GOP US House member calling for getting out of the US Constitution. GOP conservative Liz Chaney has this to say:
Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) responded to Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-Ga.) call for a “national divorce” on Monday, suggesting that it was “unconstitutional.”
“Our country is governed by the Constitution. You swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution. Secession is unconstitutional. No member of Congress should advocate secession, Marjorie,” Cheney tweeted in response to Greene’s comments.
Cheney’s response comes after Greene once again called for a “national divorce” earlier on Monday, suggesting that Republican and Democratic states should be separated and that the federal government should be downsized.
“We need a national divorce. We need to separate by red states and blue states and shrink the federal government,” Greene said on Monday. “From the sick and disgusting woke culture issues shoved down our throats to the Democrat’s traitorous America Last policies, we are done.”
"No member of Congress should advocate secession, Marjorie," Cheney said, firing back at Greene's call for a "national divorce." https://t.co/maHfwXu1BR

Let’s review some of the governing principles of America, @mtgreenee:
Our country is governed by the Constitution. You swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution.
Secession is unconstitutional. No member of Congress should advocate secession, Marjorie. https://t.co/XE3cQXYrnl— Liz Cheney (@Liz_Cheney) February 20, 2023
It is this kind of division in this country’s political parties manifested by Donald Trump which has initiated the Second Civil War as I have dubbed it.
Now what to do? Well, to acknowledge the severity of Greene’s treason would be a starting point. And Liz Chaney has made a start.
However, in a democracy that truly functions the main recourse is to the ballot box and that is why this upcoming 2024 Election is the most important since the first Civil War!
The most significant action meantime is the continuation of having Blue states continuing to offer the true picture of our history populated with such heroes as Frederick Douglas and the enormous number of subsequent brave African Americans who has dramatically changed the racial picture now in America.
We know the job is far from done but the recognition of the deaths of young African American males from police brutality helps us understand the need for education and leadership. The killing of a young black man in Memphis by black policemen showed how endemic the racism is. It provided us a key example of appropriate responses by Memphis leadership which hopefully will lead to needed changes.
We are at a crossroads and the future is now up for resolution. Do we go the GOP authoritarian route or the route of open free and enlightened democracy?
