Reading the June 8th Washington story about Christie’s chances after he announced his candidacy to win the Republican nomination for President, the initial reaction from pundits was no chance.

His main theme from these political experts was and is that he is a potential Trump spoiler but again with no chance of winning.

His performance however on CNN on June 12th was extremely strong in his condemnation of Trump, something his challengers have not done. One CNN commentator noted his rather fatherly image that he presented on CNN was not what he remembered when he was Governor and made combative attacks on people. His 3 adult children were in the front row of his GOP only audience questioners and talked of their future and his grandchildren’s.

This CNN broadcast gave him a chance to describe his generally effective record as two term governor which was hurt by the Bridgegate Scandal which he claimed he did not know about and kept Trump from naming him as his VP running mate.

You can read the story here.

His ties with the former President were extensive and broke down Christie claimed only after Trump claimed the 2022 election loss was a fraud, then further augmented by the events on January 6th and Trump’s refusal to show up at Biden’s nomination.

His language about Trump featured Christie’s hitting him with what he claimed is Trump’s most Achilles heal word: LOSER, LOSER, LOSER. Then saying–I paraphrase here his exact words—Trump is an egotistical, self-centered child who cares only for himself not the American citizens.

In checking his overall performance as Governor, these CNN reporters gave him credit for generally honest remarks except for his denial of the Russian influence in the 2016 Election.

CNN reporters said,

Christie spoke about Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and the topic of Russian collusion.

“I was involved in that campaign in 2016 with Donald Trump,” Christie said. “Let me tell you something. I can guarantee you there was no colluding going on. They were trying to figure out how to get from New York to Wisconsin. …Colluding with the Russians was the last thing they were thinking about.”

Facts First: Christie only told half the story. It’s true that special counsel Robert Mueller never accused any Trump campaign associates of conspiring with Russian officials. But Mueller found dozens of secret contacts between Trump aides and Russian agents, several attempts to coordinate, and that Trump’s team was “receptive” to some offers.

In his report, Mueller said: “The investigation established multiple links between Trump Campaign officials and individuals tied to the Russian government. Those links included Russian offers of assistance to the Campaign. In some instances, the Campaign was receptive to the offer, while in other instances the Campaign officials shied away.”

On his overall governing ability, the Camden firing of the police department got favorable mention but some caveats by CNN reporters CNN’s Tami Luhby and Ella Nilsen.

Quote: Camden police department and violent crime

Christie pointed to the police reform efforts he supported in Camden, New Jersey, as proof that he could bring down violent crime.

“Who would you rather have to deal with the problem of rampant crime in our cities all over this country? I’ve done this in the city of Camden, New Jersey, and you know this – 10 years ago, it was the most dangerous city in America. You know what I did? And I don’t think this is compromised Republican principles, I fired the entire Camden city police department,” said Christie, noting that they created a new police department.

“You know what the result is? The stats just came out this week. The 10-year anniversary of the firing of that department, murder rates in Camden are down 75% from 10 years ago.”

Facts First: This is mostly true but needs context. Camden was the most dangerous city in America 10 years ago, with the highest rate of violent crime in the country according to FBI data. But Christie did not personally fire Camden’s police department, instead supporting efforts to dissolve and build a new police force.

This latest Trump Federal’s indictment on secret documents brought by DOJ’s Jack Smith could change the whole story and buttress Christie since the other candidates except one have not brought the attack to Trump, who has that 30% or higher Trump MAGA block likely to give Trump the nomination.

However, the alternative Trumpers and the never Trumpers may in assuming another certain Trump loss combine to back another candidate, like Christie.

All the present GOP candidates keep saying what a terrible job Biden has done, and Christie, age 60, cited Trump at 78 and Biden at 80 simply were too old.

Biden’s first term accomplishments seem formidable. Read again here.

Biden is perceived by a majority of Americans as a moderate, a person of reasonable integrity and a man who has been strong in bringing the two parties together.

Thus, as many experts have projected, his chances of winning a second term are presently very likely!

Christie, a pro-life Catholic, joins his GOP colleagues with their anti choice laws, attacks on LBGTQs, and his no solution answer to gun control, but I have read or heard no stated position from him favoring Christian nationalism or censorship of literature in schools which should frighten the members of both parties.

As Peggy Noonan wrote in her June 3rd Wall Street Journal column, the GOP could under another Trump nomination be on the road to extinction.

Is Christie the GOP moderates’ savant? Results in the upcoming August 23rd GOP Presidential debate in Milwaukee Wisconsin could be his only chance to prove to be that person. Can he even qualify to participate? Trump likely won’t participate.
