Long time Republican consultant Stuart Stevens sounded the alarm with his latest book, entitled Conspiracy to End America: Five Ways My Old Party is Driving Our Democracy to Autocracy.
I urgently suggest you listen to his compelling 10/24/23 WETA interview with Amna Nawaz.
He links Trump as analogous to Hitler in that the GOP top leaders like Mitch McConnell thought they could control Trump, but of course like Hitler, the elite GOP party leaders found otherwise.
I suspect Stevens agrees with the Robert Reich’s contention that Trump is a potential dictator.
One of the mysteries of how Trump was able to destroy the GOP and create it in his own image remains somewhat uncertain, but Stevens suggests Trump’s animal magnitude caused the morally weak elected Republicans to seem concerned about Trump’s behavior but went docilely along with his feloneous behavior as many of the stronger traditional GOP members retired.
This is precisely the arguments of the authors of “Tyranny of the Minority” which I just covered in my 10/24 Op Ed.

Stevens’ latest book assumes vital importance, as so few Republicans are willing to call Trump out for his traitorous attempts to kill our democracy. This includes most of the GOP Presidential candidates and even Chris Christie’s attacks lack impact since he was a long time Trumpian.
Stevens credentials as a GOP backer are extensive! As Wikipedia tells us, “Stuart Stevens is an American travel writer and political consultant. He was the cofounder of Washington, D.C. - based political media consultancy Stevens & Schriefer Group (with Russell Schriefer). In 2013, he became a founding partner in Strategic Partners & Media. He served as a top strategist for Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign in addition to several other significant presidential campaigns over the course of his career. He later joined The Lincoln Project, a Republican Never Trump group for the 2020 United States presidential election”.

As you heard in his WETA interview on 10/24/23 with Amn Nawaz, Stevens calls the collapse of this major party unique in the history of our republic. The real possibility of Trump’s re-election because of voter indifference has been pointed out by many but not absorbed by too many of us, NOT just the tranquillized MAGAs.
Under all this turmoil, remains the racism that drove Trump’s rise. The selection is on 10/25, 2023 after 3 weeks of absurd delay of Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) a hard-core Trump supporter as House Speaker is not a surprise and still leaves all the undone work in limbo.
