Ohio’s Jim Jordan’s failure to gain the Speakership in the US House after two ballots suggests that the fate of Kevin McCarthy (who got elected briefly after 15 ballots) and Steve Scalese reflect again where the party stands and continues to bow to Trump.
As of October 19th, while Jordan claims he will still win, what he can get done if he does remains in doubt. His insistence on keeping running in the face to his record shows the depth to which the Trump GOP has sunk.
Veteran columnist Karen Tumulty’s Washington Post 10/19/23 opinion piece on Jordan entitled “The country owes a debt to the Republicans who rejected Jim Jordan” offers conclusive evidence of his and their authoritarian intentions. The Trump created GOP nihilism wing’s tactics of attacking our traditional institutions by spreading fear to seek to retain power with its increasingly smaller margin of supporters has now been exposed as well as its racist ideology.
Tumulty emphasizes that “shocking was that so many were willing to hand power to a conspiracy theorist who worked to overturn an election, who encouraged an insurrection and who, less than three weeks ago, voted to shut down the government.”

Tumulty doesn’t need to make the obvious and often made point by responsible media that Trump’s underlying motivation is spreading racism and fear of white replacement to his MAGA followers in order to gain authoritarian power.
Ironically page one 10/19/23 Washington Post article entitled “A Categorical no to the concept of race” which starts “Race isn’t real, science says.” Now, these activists want society and the census to argue eloquently that all ethnicities are not different makes the long-understood fact that has proven to be a cancer in our country even before 1791!

We have made substantial racial progress, but now happily more and more the Trump GOP has gotten unmasked. And the House turmoil offers another example by its absence of the ability to govern.
The non-Trump Republicans may have some integrity left, but more likely if the party ultimately decides to eschew Trump will be the practical realization they can’t win with Trump as their candidate. That fact may or maybe not get an alternative candidate nominated.
Its present House leadership keeps paralleling its leader in standing for or by not speaking out against Trump’s messages of fear, hate, intimidation, and retribution that has exposed its growing concerned GOP majority to understand its threat to our democracy.
Trump daily showes his distain for the law with his arrogance. Example, as Truthout tells us the “Trump Campaign Exploits Gag Order to Raise Money as Legal Bills Pile Up”, a standard practice as his indictments continue to head to trials.

The ultimate veto of Trump’s behavior may be precipitated by some of his indicted coconspirators who don’t want to spend time in jail. We learn on October 19th that Sidney Powell, a former Trump Attorney, has plead guilty in Georgia Election-Interference Case.

Our long trail of overt national racism isn’t unique of course as events worldwide confirm but the 2024 Presidential election, our most consequential election since the Civil War, will determine the future of our democracy.
