The Spineless GOP Could Have Saved Us From Trump After January 6th’s Insurrection, But Gave In To Him

At the time of the 2015 Hillary Clinton Donald Trump campaign, I was one of many people who assumed any candidate who bragged about how he could treat women or get away with shooting someone in NYC and getting away with it, would not get elected.

I have since written innumerable Op Ed pieces chronicling our fall as a nation into a quagmire of cross firing misinformation that will befuddle voters who may not grasp the Trump cancer into not voting or voting for a fascist.

The fallacy of keeping the Electoral College system for determining election winners has now been confirmed by the fact that in past 7 Presidential elections only one candidate getting the most votes has been elected, the rest by winning with more Electoral College votes. That trend is likely to continue, certainly in this year, but also in the future.

When Trump took office in 2016 many voters including me were shocked at who he was. I was prompted then to compose OP Eds describing how unsuitable Trump was for being President.

By December 9, 2020 a letter I wrote to a longtime colleague summarized Trump’s dangerous political proclivities which you can read in part here:

This year has been unbelievable. The intro to my last year’s essay collection forecast Trump but not the pandemic. And the sad fact that 74 million voters still fail to understand his Hitler like attack on our democracy. As we begin the new year (2021) with only the 3rd impeachment process in US history, I wanted to make only one prediction: Donald John Trump has already been convicted for history in the court of public opinion.

The impeachment process which did not convict him in the gutless US Senate is now clear that most Americans now can see the extremes of corruption to which some politicians will go to accept as David Brooks recently noted being like the man himself, ignoring the multiple flaws of President Trump. No one can doubt that our democracy has now been seriously affected by Trump’s behavior. History will harshly judge him.

Trump lost the 2020 Presidential election in November, but his phase so often repeated, “Frankly we did win it” was an historic initiation of a lie which could spell disaster for our democracy!

Now with the inability of the House to govern at a critical time in Ukraine’s war, our NATO allies must be as much on edge as Zelinsky. One reader of my earlier Op Ed about Trump’s attacks on NATO quipped that we better fund Ukraine or learn to speak Russian. And European nations in NATO realize that their troops and ours could be needed if Ukraine as our proxy fighter can’t win against Russia.

Regardless of the outcome of 2024 Presidential race, the primary major of maximum world danger remains the untreated world population growth, too long ignored by world leaders as one of many articles citing the fundamental cause of earth’s troubles entitled “Population can’t be ignored. It has to be part of the policy solution to our world’s problems”!!! It points out the fundamental danger of such growth and just appeared on this web site.

As homo sapiens continue to evolve, author Jamie Metzl’s book “Hacking Darwin” brilliantly outlines our need to bring morality to human evolution. We can only hope humans will have success in keeping our precious Earth livable despite our long and continuing history of mindless environmental degradation. Earth had 2 billion humans alive at my birth in 1931. Now we have almost 8 billion and the likely increase to 10 or more billion by 2057. A cataclysm seems likely and you can pick any one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse to reduce our numbers.

In the remaining lifetime allotted me, I plan to keep current on the population issue which hopefully will be resurrected to the urgent prominence it deserves by the world leaders as a major avenue to peace, stability and progress. However, bringing human population numbers to sustainable levels must be our number one priority if our planet is to thrive.

Meantime we can hope the vicious political division Trump has caused will shame some of the GOP to rise and show integrity instead of shameless capitulation to the most dangerous President in our history.
