Here is the perfect example of the adage “perfect is the enemy of the good”. After months of carefully bipartisan negotiations a compromise Senate immigration bill got sidelined without being enacted as the nation squirmed in anxiety at the unbridled border crisis!
That failure to legislate a fair and comprehensive law exemplifies and joint blame can properly rest at the door of both parties for their 40 years or more of failures to fix our broken immigration system.
Can one embarrass the unembarrassedly self-interested GOP leaders in their own political futures! No, but you can point out their venial stupidity and their willingness to avoid the public good and clearly become losers for our democracy!
After the Wall Street Journal advised that the compromise immigration bill negotiated over months at the instigation of the GOP was the best deal it could expect to get, Trump and his junior G-man House Speaker Mike Johnson (who hadn’t read the immigration bill before claiming it was unsatisfactory) promptly encouraged the GOP Senators to reject this carefully hammered out compromise, so Trump could use the issue in his campaign against Biden in the Presidential campaign.
In addition to his politically motivated attack on the immigration bill, Speaker Johnson had a bad day on Tuesday, February 6th as his attempt to get his colleagues to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas failed. He will try again later, but the bravery of the 3 GOP voters may give him pause.
The 2/6/24 Washington Post said,
Reps. Tom McClintock (R-Calif.), Ken Buck (R-Colo.) and Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.) bucked the party line to vote against the measure, joining Democrats who have decried the process as a sham, with only two hearings last month that featured no fact witnesses or testimony from the secretary. Even if the measure had passed, Mayorkas was unlikely to have been convicted in a trial in the Democratic-led Senate.
When the vote unexpectedly came to a tie after Gallagher’s vote against the measure, he was swarmed by his colleagues on the House floor in a last-ditch attempt to change his mind. Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Jodey Arrington (R-Tex.) were among the members who approached Gallagher and animatedly tried to persuade him to flip his vote. Gallagher stood listening with his arms folded across his chest as he intermittently gesticulated and shook his head. As Democrats shouted “order” in unison to bring the tied vote to a close, Rep. Blake D. Moore (R-Utah) eventually approached the lectern and changed his vote to no, allowing Republican leadership to possibly bring the measure up for a vote again at a later date.

The three brave Senators who spent untold months on the compromise bill were not pleased with the immediate attacks and rejections! As ABC’s article says
The three senators who negotiated a bipartisan bill that would beef up border security and immigration enforcement while authorizing more assistance to Israel, Taiwan and Ukraine on Monday defended the package after House Republicans — led by Speaker Mike Johnson — are pushing to squash the deal before it even gets to the lower chamber.
Sens. James Lankford, R-Okla., Chris Murphy, D-Conn., and Kyrsten Sinema, I-Ariz., worked for months to negotiate the terms of the $118.28 billion bipartisan national security supplemental package, the text of which was released Sunday night.
Hours after the text’s release, Johnson shot it down, saying in a statement that the bill is “dead on arrival” and “even worse than we expected, and won’t come close to ending the border catastrophe the President created.”
Then of course the GOP solution to the crisis is to do nothing and await the election of Trump to a 2nd term???????????????

President Biden had a few words to say about not acting on the border crisis, as a campaign issue Trump wanted use all year long. As Reuters reported
Biden will test whether blaming Trump for thwarting a bipartisan compromise can help change American minds.
“I’ll be taking this issue to the country and the voters are gonna know that…just at the moment we’re going to secure the border and fund these other programs Trump and the MAGA Republicans said no because they’re afraid of Donald Trump,” Biden said at the White House.

I was heartened to receive this email from the Federation For American Immigration Reform (FAIR) which lauded the position in favor of the compromise bill by our beset and underfunded Border Patrol Agents. It said in part
FAIR has the most extensive and active network of law enforcement personnel focused on immigration reform in the country. Our voice and our values reflect the large majority of Americans who wish to shore up border security and implement immigration policies that benefit America and its security, first and foremost. FAIR proudly supports our Border Patrol agents and their vital role in protecting our nation.”
The border crisis has been overwhelming for agents on the front line. Let the Border Patrol know that we stand with them in solidarity this Valentine’s Day by sharing warm thoughts and support.
While it is not yet Valentine’s Day FAIR could have added to this brief statement strong support for the brave 3 Senators mentioned above!
One wonders how long the shredded GOP party will keep showing obedience to the party’s dictator and its junior G-man House Speaker Johnson?
Meanwhile, using a Wall Street Journal story, the 2/7/24 front page Wall Street Journal uses its story entitled “Why Americans So Down on a Strong Economy” which tells of the economy’s historically high the robustness. Seems the uncertainty may stem in part of our troubled political divide as we hear into this dangerous election year. No wonder after reading the above examples of such instability!!!
Read the story here and decide if you agree.
