Will Trump’s Pecker Trigger His Conviction? Will It Matter?

On WETA’s evening news interview with NY Times Opinion columnist David Brooks on Friday April 26 Brooks twice said the US is a democracy in decline. Then in Peggy Noonan’s 4/27 column in the Wall Street Journal, she bemoans the ugliness of our cultural replays of old classics such as Cabaret evoking the broader issue of our national condition.

David Pecker’s testimony at Trump’s porn queen trial as described in the attached article below raises many slimy examples of the negativity of our present political situation. If you were ajar to know where you wanted to go on this issue obviously since convicting a former president is a unique historical situation, you are wondering how the jury will come down and what effect it will have on November 5th.

Perhaps of the many reporting jobs on the trial this last week, this one by the NY Times of April 24th seemed to me the most comprehensive.

That this trial is about Trump’s felony to influence his 2016 election seems more than confirmed by his claim of electoral fraud in the 2020 election followed by his coup attempts on January 6, 2021!!! The Supreme Court majority Trump created has long delayed a ruling on Trump’s immunity insures the coup case will not occur before the election on November 5th.

Briefly, from the Times article:

During their cross-examination of Mr. Pecker, Mr. Trump’s lawyers set out to show that such deals were “standard operating procedure” in the tabloid business, and that only about half of all stories purchased made it to print.

One of the defendant’s lawyers, Emil Bove, pushed Mr. Pecker about the real purpose of the deal with Ms. McDougal, whether her top priority was money and whether the agreement had other benefits for her. Mr. Pecker conceded that dozens of articles were published under her name.

But Mr. Pecker later testified that the agreement’s real purpose had been to bury the story of the affair.

The Washinton Post’s 4/26th article offers most grit to the truth of the bribe’s intended impact on Trump’s election here.

Some people will argue that the massive amount of press this is giving Trump terrific publicity, even though he is not able to campaign he is after all campaigning right there in the courtroom in front of a national audience!

Is our fragile democracy in decline as Brooks believes and Noonan implies? To many non MAGA voters the shock of having a man of his character plausibly in position to be elected in November certainly lends credence to their observations.

The horror of his likely polices if again President of the United States include his admiration of Putin to stop any funding for Ukraine which would seriously undermine NATO and destroy our leadership as world leader in the quest for democracy, just begins a long list of issues which the US and the world face.

Another? The dominant worldwide issue is Trump’s disregard of the climate situation. Its driver seldom addressed by any leader has been the growth of global human numbers from 2 billion in 1931 to 8 billion now.

This underlying fact is also the driver of worldwide immigrants seeking safer respites. We know Trump’s refusal to allow the House GOP he controls to enact the compromise immigration bill put forward by the Senate was because he wishes to save that issue to use in his campaign!

We know from many reports that his complete egocentric focus on being reelected involves the prospect of taking authoritarian control of our democracy, but his real concern about being reelected is to keep himself from going to jail.

Now we get the true story from David Pecker, his longtime friend, collaborator, and instigator of this 2016 Presidential campaign effort to keep the Stormy story out of the press after the Access Hollywood story where Trump claimed that he could grab any woman by her genitals!

The jury will in due course decide if Trump’s long time fixer lawyer, Michael Cohen, is a credible witness. Perhaps you will ponder if Brooks and Noonan are correct about the USA being a democracy in decline or culturally in an ugly state.

The title of my article suggests, as one who has long written about this dangerous man’s threat to democracy, that our democracy is not in such a state of decline if the majority of voters make the choice of an honorable if not fully popular choice over a felonious fascist aspirant.
