Don’t be fooled by the Supreme Court’s Mifepristone decision. It is still part of the continuing attack on women’s health and their free rights. As the 6/14 Washington Post article entitled “Court rejects abortion pill challenge, but what happens next?”.

A Supreme Court win for abortion rights doesn’t mean the issue is settled

The Supreme Court declined to limit access to a widely used abortion medication, but the unanimous ruling is unlikely to end the legal fight over the pill.

The panel sided with the Biden administration and the manufacturer of mifepristone yesterday, reversing a lower court decision that would have made it more difficult to obtain the drug used in more than 60 percent of abortions in the United States.

The high court didn’t address whether the Food and Drug Administration acted lawfully when it made it easier to obtain mifepristone starting in 2016. Instead, the nine justices said that the antiabortion doctors behind the lawsuit lacked standing as they neither prescribe nor use the drug, and the agency’s relaxed regulations don’t compel them to do anything.

“Rather, the plaintiffs want FDA to make mifepristone more difficult for other doctors to prescribe and for pregnant women to obtain,” Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh wrote for the court. Under the Constitution, he added, a group’s “desire to make a drug less available for others does not establish standing to sue.”

Kavanaugh emphasized that doctors opposed to abortion are protected by federal conscience laws from performing care that violates their beliefs and can voice objections through legislative, regulatory or political means.

Here is my main contention: The religious right’s serious opposition will continue, but more important voters need to understand how the choice issue is the political lynch pin to Trump’s 2nd term plans for dismantling our democracy.

Even if one questions Trump’s truthfulness, one should not fail to listen to what he and his colleagues are saying beyond the powerful influences of the ideologically packed Supreme Court.

As Liz Cheney, a former Republican US House of Representatives leader and Vice Chair of the US House January 6th investigation committee, predicts, “The Supreme Court is likely to place Donald Trump above the law in its immunity case”. This makes it even more likely he won’t be tried before November 5th for his felonious attempt to keep Biden from assuming the Presidency after the 2020 election.

This list well documented by expert opinions offers reasons not to vote for Trump is longer than this one, but selected for priority:

1. Abandonment by many elected GOP Congressional members of integrity, and their oaths to uphold laws and governing.

2. Promising retribution of perceived enemies including Biden, replacing effective government employees with loyal toadies.

3. Fostering Isolationism in the face of world disarray.

4. Destroying our international role as a bastion of democracy by undermining our NATO commitments.

5. Not recognizing the continuing threat posed by Putin, particularly the effect on our European and Asian alliances.

6. Promoting Christian Nationalism which backs making Christianity the national religion.

7. Attacking the Constitutional restriction to maintain the separation of church and state.

8. Failing to enact the strong bi-partisan immigration legislation which Trump blocked to use as a cudgel against Biden.

9. Banning abortion which only bans safe abortions and intimidating MDs.

Failing to vote for Biden considering Trump’s plans to undermine our freedoms is akin to me to voters committing felonies themselves!!

Of course, human survival should be our obvious number one priority! This would not be a bi-partisan issue except Trump doesn’t believe in this well documented threat. Human activity has raised the Earth’s surface temperatures higher than at any time in the last 120,000 years. We’re on track to surpass the 1.5ºC warming target at record pace, probably by midcentury while current weather conditions turn ever more devastating.

Conservative attacks on voluntary population limitation by denying women full access to fertility control will not stop the powerful trend lower human numbers underway worldwide. Still sustainable resources are inadequate now to serve our present world population of 8 billion. Whether that decline will occur fast enough to avoid the threats of war, famine, pestilence or loss of all democracy as vicious dictators imprison us all.

Aldous Huxley’s 1958 essay Brave New World Revisited forecasted total world tyranny, now possible as we watch right wing government resurging worldwide.

My pessimism still allows me to believe that human ingenuity, and not ignoring the above threats, can still allow habitable life on earth to survive. We could make a tentative first step by not electing Donald Trump this November!!!
