Biden’s Caught By His Age And The Irrationality Of Too Many Voters!

After watching Biden’s June 27th debate performance, I was convinced that his age had truly overtaken his mental acuity as well as his physical strength to carry forward to victory in November. Notwithstanding all other considerations, for all Americans who believe in our democracy beating Trump should be the prime priority for our democracy, not whether Biden can last 4 more years.

Biden’s performance, since that disastrous debate on 6/27, has satisfied me that he is qualified to effectively govern as President now. If he were elected to a second term, Vice President Kamala Harris represents a very able and qualified leader who could assume the Presidency should Biden need replacing. That scenario, however, reminds us of the history of Woodrow Wilson who in 1919 was incapacitated by a stroke and kept in office by his wife and his physician sequestered in his DC home until the end of his term in 1920.

Why have the circumstances changed so radically for me and so many faithful Biden backers. Simple, Trump’s Saturday July 13th shooting happened two days before the opening of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. Mercifully Trump did not become America’s fifth Presidential assassination.

However, the image of near tragedy symbolized by Trump’s raised fist and his shout of “Fight” gave his fortuitous survival a strong impetuous of power which has played all week at the RN Convention as a sure sign of his victory for a 2nd term.

While Biden’s immediate call against all such violence and his personal call to Trump was effective, it could not erase Trump’s conquering hero image as he arrived at the RNC with his bandaged right ear that seemed to give him a godhead status to his partisans as they listened to an almost manic recitation of all the lies and misinformation which Trump had previously stated.

Vance, a young Trump clone, brings an image of vitality and an up from poverty success story which added to the excitement for the MAGA voters. Of course, looking at Vance’s positions on key issues such as abortion access will chill enthusiasm for most voters.

Then Biden on Wednesday July 17 contracts COVID which forces him to cancel a campaign appearance.

This news contrasted sharply with the optimism of the party like RN Convention atmosphere!

Are many respected media and political commentators wrong in predicting Biden’s loss of the Presidency and quite possibly, if he heads the ticket, both the Senate and the House on November 5th?? I sadly think not.

Now more and more senior democrats favor Biden stepping aside. This is unfair to Biden based on the outstanding accomplishments of his first term, but the growing risk of losing is magnified by the bizarre events since 7/13. The pressure will continue to mount for Biden to withdraw, even as many including me have argued that Biden’s replacement candidates don’t poll much better.

However, despite comparing Biden’s slight age difference to Trump’s and Biden’s excellent medical reports, the pall on his every campaign appearance will evoke concern about his potential infirmities that could continuously mute his powerful arguments to throw out the proven corruption and authoritarian aspirations of Trump and his MAGA GOP!

Solution? None have yet been offered with any certainty. Sadly, the Democrats’ leaders may attempt now, as graciously as possible, although it likely won’t be gracious, to force Biden to step down. That would surely keep Harris at the top of the ticket and will make vital finding a strong male VP candidate such as Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg.

To repeat, every time Biden now appears in public, his audience will not be fully listening to his arguments for their votes as much as whether he will show signs of any mental or physical disability.

If the majority of the Democratic leadership wants this change, Democratic leaders must, with time running out, deal with an entrenched Biden whose delegates’ have mixed views. For example, in the swing state of Michigan, Democrats “cut off a vulnerable House Democrat from a major part of campaign operations after she called last week for President Joe Biden to step down from the ticket”.

Read here a not uncommon pro Biden opinion.

Harris certainly can voice the lies coming full-throated from Trump and all his MAGA allies at the RNC, but her popularity over Biden’s is marginal according to polling.

Advocates for change claim to do less will sell out our democracy to Trump, who despite his denials, will facilitate the implementation of the plans of the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 to dismantle our federal government.

And remember no GOP leader has promised to recognize the results of the election if Biden wins, promising chaos if he does. That is the hard choice we are facing, and most Democrats now see the urgent need to install a more youthful team to bring the facts to all voters.
