When President McKinley a conservative Republican from Ohio was assassinated and died on September 14th 1901, Theodore Roosevelt became President and effectively was able to begin to attack the Gilded Age monopolistic tyrants that put masses of the poor in economic distress. Roosevelt brought forward numerous liberal reforms! His ascendency was a fluke as the GOP had nominated Teddy, a rising but too liberal Republican, as a means of putting him out of play for higher office.
Should history have echoed in Butler with Trump’s assassination it is hard to speculate on how that would have affected the Democrats selection of candidate at what would doubtless have been an open Democratic convention so perhaps Harris’s pick will be fortuitous since she could win as I have predicted.
If JD Vance had then been selected as the GOP Presidential candidate, I believe he would be even more dangerous than the aged Trump! And if Trump is elected at 78, Vance looms as a more powerful clone.
BREAKING: Jake Tapper literally laughs in JD Vance’s face as Vance tries (and fails) to explain why so many people who worked with Trump are now speaking out against him. This is a must watch. pic.twitter.com/JA69wWU6LI

Watching Trump and Vance tell obvious lies over and over which are transmitted on various media millions of times one realizes the sad fact that fact checking has become impossible except by reading or listening to reputable news sources now badly obscured by real “fake news” offerings.
If I met him, I would say, “Mr. Vance, you ain’t another Teddy Roosevelt!”
Yet despite their utter lack of integrity they could well win on November 5th!
So, just as too many GOP Congressional representatives buckled and allowed a fascist to take over their party, we now see that the greed from many big billionaires rallied to Trump as an insurance policy when in truth they are giving a proven felon the most powerful job in the world!
Those spineless billionaires who want to save their wealth, power and big government contracts have taken steps to be okay with Trump if he wins. Losing our democracy apparently means nothing to them.
As the October 28 Washington Post article entitled “Some billionaires, CEOs hedge bets as Trump vows retribution”.
It begins:
At a five-star resort in California last week, Wall Street executives, fast-food CEOs, a few dozen other industry titans and two former presidents gathered for off-the-record conversations. One subject that inevitably came up, according to two people familiar with the matter: The possibility that former president Donald Trump could return to the White House.
The gathering of the Business Council — an invitation-only association of chief executives — at the Waldorf Astoria Monarch Beach in Dana Point was not supposed to be about the election, but some attendees wound up discussing how to protect themselves and their companies if Trump wins the presidency next week and tries to use the power of the Oval Office against his perceived enemies, said the people, speaking on the condition of anonymity to describe private conversations.
At one event, former president Bill Clinton warned about the dangers Trump poses to democracy and the nation’s rule of law, while former president George W. Bush expressed concern about high tariff rates, which some attendees heard as a rebuke of Trump’s tariff plans, two of the people said.
With the White House appearing increasingly up for grabs, and especially as polls have tightened, numerous billionaires and other leading executives have taken steps in recent months to stay out of the race — even if they had criticized Trump after the Capitol insurrection of Jan. 6, 2021, calling his encouragement of the riot a threat to American democracy. Others who previously backed Democrats have stayed silent this election, which some critics and Trump supporters alike have interpreted as a peace offering to the GOP presidential nominee.

Not enough voters appear to be listening to the increasingly unstable Trump’s ranting promises for reprisals against his internal enemies or his mad fixation with tariffs on foreign goods which would destroy our current most powerful economy in the world, ignore our present prosperity and fail to recognize the outstandingly successful Biden administration’s record.
Thus the US becomes more and more isolationist by adopting Trump’s America First policy which like the dangerous America First policy led by Lindburgh which prevailed before WW2 only broken by Pearl Harbor.
This time if Trump abandons NATO and Ukraine as many like Lindbergh ignored the growing threat of Hitler, American men will end in war with Russia and Iran.
Now unless women step up big time these economic Trump funding giants will give Trump term two and plunge into a dictatorship from which we won’t easily recover.
In an October 26th NY Times opinion piece entitled “How Bad Do You Want It, Ladies?” by Maureen Dowd she challenges women to get out and vote.
She writes,
Usually, I get political wisdom from Rahm Emanuel, not his brother Ari.
But a quote from Ari, the Hollywood macher, to Puck’s Matthew Belloni about the gender chasm in 2024 caught my eye.
“This election is gonna come down to probably 120,000 votes,” Ari said. “You probably have 60 percent of the male vote for Trump, and the female vote is 60-40 for Kamala. It’s a jump ball. We’re gonna find out who wants this more — men or women.”
Are we back to the days of Mars versus Venus? Or did we never leave?
It is the ultimate battle of the sexes in the most visceral of elections. Who will prevail? The women, especially young women, who are appalled at the cartoonish macho posturing and benighted stances of Donald Trump and his entourage? Or the men, including many young men, union men, Latino and Black men, who are drawn to Trump’s swaggering, bullying and insulting, seeing him as the reeling-backward antidote to shrinking male primacy.
Drilling into the primal yearnings of men and women — their priorities, identities, anger and frustration — makes this election even more fraught. When I wrote a book about gender in 2005, I assumed that, a couple of decades later, we’d all be living peacefully on the same planet. But no Cassandra, I. The sexual revolution intensified our muddle, leaving women in a tangle of dependence and independence in the 21st century. The more we imitated men, the more we realized how different we were.
Progress zigzags. But it was dispiriting to see the fierce backlash to Geraldine Ferraro, Anita Hill and Hillary Clinton’s co-presidency and candidacy..
In Kamala Harris’s case, the backlash is evident even before the election. Surveys reflect the same doubts about a woman in the White House that I saw covering Ferraro in 1984. Many men — and many women — still wonder if women are too emotional to deal with world leaders and lead the military.
Other countries overcame this stereotypical thinking about women leaders, but there is still a thick strain of it in America.
Harris is running way behind where Joe Biden was in 2020 with both white and Black men. It would sting if Black men sunk the chance for the first Black woman to become president, just as enough white women spurned Hillary in 2016 to tip the balance.
It is sad that women had to be stripped of their basic right to control their bodies — and to be threatened with the loss of lifesaving medical care — for Kamala to even have a chance to get the votes of enough women to offset losing the votes of so many men.
Trump is running a hypermasculine campaign — with Chief Bro Elon Musk bizarrely bouncing up and down — that is breathtakingly offensive to women. Trump is exploiting the crisis among Gen Z men, a crisis driven by loneliness, Covid isolation, economic insecurity, a lack of purpose and a feeling that the modern world seems more accommodating to young women.

As Dowd says, “How Bad do you want it, Ladies?
I am personally in a panic but still counting on women to save our democracy! And I stand by my earlier op ed entitled “Trump’s Defeat is Surprisingly sure!” which you can read again here.
"Some polls report the abortion issue has relatively small power to motivate men’s voting. However, I believe the polls underestimate the number of women whose vote will be determined by the loss of Roe!"

My meager qualifications for this optimism arise from the opinions of Bill Maher and James Carville the latter who seems to be ignoring his famous saying “It’s the economy, Stupid.” But this is the most important election in his and my lifetimes so we must hope for redemption over disaster.
You can read Carville’s 10/23/24 NYTimes piece entitled “Three Reasons I’m Certain Kamala Harris Will Win” here.
