Is anti-women bias a major reason why democracy is falling under Trump?

Netflix currently is showing a six-episode documentary on Thomas Jefferson, which offers the most balanced view of the author of our Declaration of Independence.

Jefferson was one of the many elites that controlled colonial America and enjoyed with enormous wealth, as well as enormous political power. His behavior proved he had, as did most men then, the power of near complete dominance over women.

It reminds us of today where women’s rights to abortion is imperiled with the loss of Roe and the continued disparity between wages and occupational positions with men.

Women generally experience some of the greatest forms of gender discrimination here and elsewhere.

While our colonial founders fashioned a unique reincarnation of a previous democracy, such as in Greece, perhaps the ultimate irony of Jefferson’s life is how women were treated in his day. Does this help explain how they are treated now 250 years later?

As someone who has been working in the field of family planning since 1965, I have seen firsthand the problems that women face today which were certainly much worse in Jefferson’s time.

His first and only wife, his beloved Martha, died in 1782 at 33 after multiple pregnancies and miscarriages with no access to modern birth control. A disconsolate Jefferson withdrew from public life just as major moves forward were being made toward our Constitutional founding in 1791.

However, he was finally encouraged to come out of retirement by his dear friend James Madison to go to Paris as a diplomat for the fledgling US government.

In order to properly attend to his personal needs, Jefferson he took along a male slave James Hemmings and James’ sister Sally Hemmings to help care for his two young daughters who accompanied him.

At that time, Jefferson was 40 years old and Sally Hemmings was 16 when he initiated what would prove to be a long-term sexual relationship.

When the French revolution broke out in 1789, Jefferson returned with his daughters and Hemmings to Monticello and continued to live his elite life with his full complement of slaves and his enduring clandestine relationship with Hemmings, who subsequently produced six children, some who passed for white. She had a room with access to Jefferson’s quarters.

This relationship was not publicly disclosed until a press report while he was President, which many thought would be disastrous, but Jefferson did nothing and the matter faded away.

Today improper male dominance is perfectly exemplified by the Jeffery Epstein scandal where most of the powerful white men are still not being prosecuted despite what they did to underage young women.

These anti-feminist billionaires are happy to ride along with Trump as they seek to complete an authoritarian takeover of our democracy.

To confirm this view read Katherine Stewart’s book, entitled “Money, Lies and God: Inside the Movement to Destroy American Democracy”.

When the book came out in February of 2025, a favorable review in the New York Times entitled, “How Trump Rode a Wave of ‘Reactionary Nihilism’ to the White House” noted that its 2/25 publication date omitted some of Trump’s subsequent behavior.

But as the review states, “this fractious movement has lined up under the banner of MAGA and Donald Trump. They speak the language of democracy while practicing the authoritarian politics of coercion and exclusion. What they all share, Stewart says, is an attitude of ‘reactionary nihilism.’ They denounce tolerance and pluralism as a catastrophic change to their preferred political order. Reactionary nihilists presume a world that is “devoid of value, impervious to reason and governable only through brutal acts of will. . .

Stewart’s previous book, ‘The Power Worshippers’ (2020) traced the rise of Christian nationalism; “Money, Lies, and God” expands the story to encompass the right-wing ‘movement to destroy American democracy.’ Beattie is just one figure in a bulging cast of characters that Stewart handily divides into five main categories: Funders, Thinkers, Sergeants, Infantry and Power Players. These groups don’t always have one another’s best interests at heart, nor do they always get along.”

Another reviewer said, “Stewart’s fine-grained and eye-opening investigation meticulously outlines the loose organizational structure that keeps these strange bedfellows banded together . . . offers urgently needed background on the 2024 election results.”

“An in-depth look at the chief strands that make up the American far right . . . An impassioned takedown of a ‘militant minority.’”

“Money, Lies, and God provides a compelling overview as well as meticulous research about the funders, leaders, and foot soldiers of religious nationalism . . . [Stewart] brilliantly explores how right-wing think tanks like the Claremont Institute provide a veneer of intellectual respectability to the movement.

A bracing must-read story of how the varied streams have merged into a mighty river moving toward massive destruction—and explains to readers how together, we can divert it.”

“Katherine Stewart has written what may be the most important political book of the day, exposing the networks of dark money funded, ultra right-wing subversives who have already done enormous damage to our Constitution and the rule of law and are now perilously close to overthrowing the American government as we know it. with persuasive precision and undeniable documentation, Stewart names and connects the dots, refusing to normalize the frighteningly abnormal, confronting powerful forces that too few reporters comprehend, let alone describe.”

The last two women who ran for President, Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris, lost by slim margins. Trump is so unpopular and his actions against women so egregious that if there was ever a time it is now when a strong woman should be identified to run in 2028.

It is certainly worth mentioning that E Gene Carol was molested by Trump and won two lawsuits requiring him to pay millions which he has yet to pay as this lawsuit is heading probably to the Supreme Court. One wonders if even the court decides Trump owes the money that was awarded by the court will be paid.
