Church and State

The party of Abraham Lincoln came into being when the Whigs and other splinter parties faltered and on its first try in 1856 the new Republicans almost elected a California patriot President.
Look his name up as part of your memory renewal program which is partly the purpose of this op ed.
Fast forward to the mid 1970’s when Barry Goldwater warned Republicans not to embrace the doctrinaire Evangelicals like Jerry Falwell and now Billy Graham’s son.
Sadly for us, the equally or even more doctrinaire Catholic hierarchy in Rome plus its ensconced array of obedient US Catholic Bishops, the combination with the Evangelicals was able to capture the Republican Party, which meant the hard right and may never be recovered.
Then add the spineless behavior of most Republican Senators, who keep for the past 4 years kissing Trump’s ring, such obeisant behavior prompts me to ask if any of them would have pleased Lincoln? None have pleased me, who in days of yore was able on occasion to vote for old Republicanism now so long gone as to have completely disappeared.
Sadly, this massive Republican defection prevails, when most Americans likely see the wisdom of having a strong 2 party government!
Trump, whose only allegiance is to himself grabbed and exploited the immigration issue, embraced the religious right and then took Hillary to the cleaners when we Democrats went to sleep on who he actually was. We now know vividly who the incumbent is from reading Bob Woodward’s book “Rage”, but much more precisely from reading Michael Cohen’s expose, “Disloyal: A Memoir” which was #7 on the NY Times Book Review non-fiction list for the 4th week.
And many others like John Kelly who served in the Trump White House and Cabinet has seen, as Kelly reportedly said, “the most flawed person I have ever met in my life.”

Trump’s ultimate legacy for which he will not be fondly remembered will of course be his appointment of 3 justices to the US Supreme Court so that Obama Care and Roe and gay rights and other personal freedoms are now put in serious jeopardy.
So what, as we get to November 3rd, is the bottom line for us voters? What we have now is an administration which is an utterly bigoted, totally morally off base entity which can’t be called even an echo of the Republican Party that was founded in 1856.
The price we will pay if Trump is re-elected will be a badly crippled democracy which we and the free nations around the world cannot respect. His word is hardly his bond would you say?
What name would you give the present Republican Party? Let me know as it certainly isn’t the party of Lincoln anymore.
