As the horror of the start of Putin’s Ukraine invasion on Wednesday night February 23rd begins to produce the heart rendering murder of innocent victims, most Americans are shocked and revulsed at his degradation of human rights.
I can well remember even at 91 those photos of British citizens in WWII gaining safety in the London subways. Hitler’s Blitz was endured because unlike the Ukrainians the Brits knew for sure what was coming. Read here.
Moreover, we should understand Putin’s pal Trump, even as his crimes keep piling up, still has huge power to continue undermining our democracy.
Here is one possible if not totally plausible example. A letter to the editor on the editorial page of the February 24th Washington Post from Ellen Brown of Fredericksburg really grabbed my attention!
Her letter is entitled “A way out for Mr. Trump” and I quote it here:
In his Feb. 20 Sunday Opinion column, “Trump’s luck may finally be running out,” George T. Conway III stated that former president Donald Trump “apparently still needs to refinance hundreds of millions” of dollars’ worth of loans. Mr. Conway didn’t mention that foreign governments such as Russia and China can easily do do this for Mr. Trump, who is well connected to current lawmakers in this country.
The Republicans who refuse to hold Mr. Trump accountable for his “sins” might soon find that, yes, they regain the presidency with Mr. Trump nominally at the helm but that he’s a Russian or Chinese puppet. Russian President Vladimir Putin would not even have to send his armies here. It would be a great financial bargain for him to finance Mr. Trump’s loans, continue to spread disinformation and get Mr. Trump reelected.
This adds to the efforts of the GOP controlled legislatures in 29 states to hinder the ability of minorities to vote.
Do I have your attention yet?
Trump’s odious record of public corruption needs factually depicted. Trump’s pre-invasion quotes confirm his backing of Putin:
Its headline: “Trump praises Putin again even as the Russian invasion of Ukraine looms, saying “the Russian president is ‘playing Biden like a drum”
Read that evidence here.
"Putin is playing Biden like a drum. It is not a pretty thing to watch!" said Trump.

The various charges against Trump, his family and his company may be litigated or not, but he and his false information spreaders will keep the loyalty of those dull bulbs who won’t get vaccinated as well as the elected GOP Congress members who will support Trump to get themselves re-elected!
And the FOX anchor Tucker Carlson urges Americans to not worry about Putin’s attack on Ukraine. Read here.

Some GOP leaders responded with dismay at Putin’s invasion, which you can read about here.

One comment from the above article was indicative of the malaise which Trump’s loyalty to Putin evoked from many in the GOP.
Sen. Todd C. Young (R-Ind.) similarly praised Biden’s sanctions and said “Putin is attacking the democratic, rules-based order that has benefited countless Americans and millions around the globe since World War II. The United States must stand with the Ukrainian people by immediately providing additional assistance, including military equipment and lethal aid.”
Will Putin bail out his pal Trump? Doubtful as he will be very busy trying to execute Ukraine’s execution, as the sanctions begin to affect not only him and his oligarchs but as protest rises from his own citizens despite their getting incarcerated. Protests likely won’t rise to the 1967 LBJ chorus from our young–“Hey, hey, LBJ, how many kids did you kill today”–but Putin’s scenario of stupidity and repression is hard to contain.

Folks, Are we on the edge of losing our freedoms to Trump’s attacks on our fragile democracy which, while still very racist, is moving in positive directions?
The sole recourse for people of good will in these troubled times is to vote for people who seek a true democratic path forward, which the Trump controlled GOP clearly does not!
