In my nearly 93-year lifetime human numbers have doubled 4 times from 2 billion to 8 with predictions as high as 3 more billion by 2100.

Having expressed great fear of the dire consequences of the already unsustainable human numbers, experts such as Paul Ehrlich see widespread global disaster coming.

Preaching solutions such as ensuring contraceptive access to every one male or female who wants contraceptives has not accomplished the needed reductions.

However, growing world turmoil and economic uncertainty have not stopped the ironically positive increase in women’s equality in many nations.

This essential and positive rise in female clout in every aspect of our US society has contributed to the decline in the per capita number of births.

And even now as total human numbers in the world are increasing temporarily, experts widely project that women’s pregnancies have been declining for decades and the population numbers will stop at the end of this century!!

Ha! There’s a glaring problem with this academic projection. It could be true except for the likelihood of the continued acceleration of the current 6th Extinction.

This inadequately addressed threat to maintaining sustainable life for huge numbers of humans and our supporting flora and fauna will remain!

Other promised effects of unchecked global warming include the rise of water inundation of costal environments and the lack of adequate potable water plus many more!

While steps to reduce the impact of global climate disruption can delay problems in limited areas, the overall confrontational effect of our present numbers fighting over diminishing resources accumulates.

Over every other threat, the looming madness of nuclear war is never going away.

Our tiny, beautiful planet, now having gone from a rare perfection interim era called the Holocene from about 11,500 years ago to now the man-made Anthropocene now with its presently imploding hazards!

We still have choices we can make to improve many planetary outcomes.

China’s population fell minutely this year, ironically to the consternation of those who think endless growth is possible on a finite planet.

Thus, this reduction for most large countries except in Africa is now fully underway: Raising children is a huge and expensive task in both time and money. As an increasing number of women everywhere want to achieve more and have more life options, raising children becomes something male spouses must share. So, we are in a fast moving time of change where there are obvious inducements for all the world’s women to stop having as many babies!

Women more than males are emotionally more keenly aware of the big dangers facing their babies as male generated wars kill more young people!

But neither sex needs to fathom complex global issues to understand raising children has become more problematic everywhere.

Will today’s capacity for the rapid transfer of information to everyone make progress possible toward world peace and stability? We can hope so as it has never so far happened in Homo Sapiens’ history.
