Now that negotiations with the combatants in Ukraine parties for peace talks between Ukraine and Russia seem deadlocked, one is more and more convinced that Vladimir Putin wants the war to go on because he sees no reason that he will lose with apparently such warm regards from Donald Trump, and the total imbalance of offers made to Volodymyr Zelenskyy by the Trump administration.
Clearly, Trump implied that if Zelenskyy did not quickly come to embrace these unbalanced off offers for settlement that the United States might very well walk away from further support.
This of course, reminds us of the long history of Trump‘s affection for the Soviets, which has been covered in a number of news articles for some years.
Here from the Guardian ‘The perfect target’: Russia cultivated Trump as asset for 40 years – ex-KGB spy”. “The KGB ‘played the game as if they were immensely impressed by his personality’, Yuri Shvets, a key source for a new book, tells the Guardian”.

Now let’s update! Here’s an article dated March 13, 2025 entitled “Fact check: Was Donald Trump recruited by the KGB and codenamed ‘Krasnov’?” by Estelle Nilsson-Julien of Euroverify.
It begins
A Facebook post by an ex-KGB agent claiming that Donald Trump was recruited by Moscow in 1987 under the code name “Krasnov” has sent social media into a spin. What’s the story behind the claim? Euroverify investigates.
When former KGB officer Alnur Mussayev claimed that US President Donald Trump was recruited as an asset for Moscow in the 1980s, it set off a storm on social media.
In a Facebook post on 20 February, Mussayev said that Trump was enlisted by the KGB in 1987 while on a trip to Moscow, then aged 40, and assigned the code name “Krasnov”. Trump has not directly responded to Mussayev’s claims. The US president has repeatedly denied having ever worked for Russia.
One thread on X, which has amassed more than 1 million views, refers to Trump as “Krasnov” and brands the US president as a Russian asset. The post goes on to list a series of claims which it presents as purported evidence for this declaration.

Meanwhile, other social media users turned to mockery, with one account posting a photo montage of Trump in a KGB outfit, with the political slogan and acronym MAGA (“Make America Great Again”) altered to read “Moscow Agent Governing America”.

Krasnov is a common surname in Russia, derived from the word “krasniy”, which means red.
A flurry of speculative media reports followed, and politicians, including British conservative MP Graham Stuart, repeated his claim, writing in X: “We have to consider the possibility that President Trump is a Russian asset”.

More currently from the Guardian: “The KGB ‘played the game as if they were immensely impressed by his personality’”, Yuri Shvets, a key source for a new book, tells the Guardian.
As Trump himself observed: “The first term, everybody was fighting me. In this term, everybody wants to be my friend.”
He’s not entirely wrong. Already, several large corporate-owned news organizations have settled multimillion-dollar lawsuits with the president to protect their business interests. Meanwhile, billionaires have intervened editorially in the news outlets they own to limit potentially unfavorable coverage of the president.
The Guardian is different: we have no interest in being Donald Trump’s – or any politician’s – friend. Our allegiance as independent journalists is not to those in power but to the public. Whatever happens in the coming months and years, you can rely on the Guardian never to bow down to power, nor back down from truth.”
Of course, we are kindly aware of the reception with Trump and Vance gave Zelensky in the oval office and the subsequent comment from Trump that Zelensky had no cards to play.
You Readers can decide but the above claims certainly are more plausible as now revived by Putin unwillingness to negotiate an end to his Ukraine invation and Trump’s clear inability to end the war he said he would immediately before taking office for his 2nd term.
