Church and State

The disgusting GOP Congress has revolted many, including me.
When I have wondered multiple times why the GOP members in Congress did not revolt against this felon President, an article appeared on June 23, 2026 in the New York Times entitled “What’s the Matter with Congress?” which offered opinions by two able experts on the basic reasons, but the major reason, one I agree with, is here:
So when members claim that fear of being primaried is the reason they can’t engage in reasonable compromise, that’s not the full story. What they really believe, but don’t dare say out loud, is that any risk to their re-election is too much risk and that they can’t be expected to do their jobs without a lifetime job guarantee.
I’ll let you read this option piece for yourself here.

Despite the brilliance of our founders in constructing a unique way of dividing power, conditions now prevail, that shows our democracy can be destroyed.
Where did that great sense of responsibility and integrity go in Congress today?
Looking at the founders who are generally very wealthy and certainly holding key positions of responsibility within their own democratically organized communities, it was far easier for them to exercise considerable restraint and integrity from their quite unassailable positions. Of course, the wealth of literature on how democracy could work best is still revered today.
But now far removed from that era which Franklin admitted produced a far from perfect document, we have these double-talking, self-interested weaklings in office who basically are more worried about their jobs than they are about anything that could help the country.
OK, you may have kids in college, a sick spouse, or other big problems, but you may also realize you took an oath to rise above that standard which has been so miserably set by the present president that you can show a weak spine, steal as much as you can, and to hell with the voters.
Without in any way, dismissing the thoughtful observations of these very experienced reporters, my argument – and in part mentioned by the two Times men—it seems to me that the fundamental underlying failure which the column discusses at length brings us to a point where, as the midterm elections loom, Trump‘s compounding felonies are so large and so well documented that all voters from all parties need to combine immediately to try to see that Trump does not complete his term.
I’ve asked my Republican colleagues to support my bill, the Protect Our Polls Act, because “None of us want our military at our polls, right?"
Their response was, “I don’t want to insult the President.”

Every day he speaks and lies and submits dangerous policy options at the same time. He continues to loot taxpayers, and others which use his office has the main incentive.
Of course, many important recitations of this phenomenon of democracy rising and falling has been provided by a special book entitled The Civic Bargain by a Brook Manville and Josiah Ober which I have now read for the second time since there is a great deal of history and wisdom which applies to the current attack on our democracy.
For example, the authors beautifully chronicle how the democracies of Athens and Rome fell into dictatorship while that of Great Britain has managed to move from Royal autocracy into a working and continuing democracy.
Right now, there seems there will be no meaningful immediate Trump containment action from the GOP Congress which can primarily attribute their utterly disgusting motivation to keep their jobs and benefits our government provides them.
What can we voters renew by winning back the government? If we can get past Trump and the unbelievably scurvy crew of people surrounding him, there are many vital long-term changes which are desperately needed to set us on a coherent course to a functioning and long-lasting democracy.

How about a new amendment killing the right of unlimited money in political campaigns as now allowed by the Citizens United law permitted by the Supreme Court.
Gerrymandering must stop. Term limits on Congress and the Supreme court?
So many other excesses and stupidities plague the operation of an effective government, which is so thoroughly analyzed in the book The Civic bargain mentioned above? I used the audio version.
Will any of that happen? The midterm election might suggest some answers if enough voters who care about a functioning democracy vote there is at least the prospect of starting a road to renewal.
