The Washington Post reports that now that indictments are starting against the Trump Organization and its CFO’s alleged past misdeeds, Donald Trump with his usual chutzpah has chosen to use these charges to rally his base.
You can read about that strategy here.

His efforts to avoid subpoenas goes back in time as you can read here.

Recall my earlier column comparing his potential conviction for tax evasion with 1930’s Chicago mobster Al Capone who was similarly convicted for tax evasion and went to jail.
Surely after Trump’s well documented record including his big lie about November 3rd voter fraud and his treasonous instigation of the January 6th Capitol insurrection, there will be a reduced appetite for a second Trump term if he chooses to run in 2024!
Even before he lost on November his appeal to women was declining as you can read here.

However, assuming Biden enjoys the benefit of a continuing economic upturn and sustaining a Democratic hold on Congress at the midterms, Biden’s chances for a 2nd term could be excellent.
In 2024 Biden will be 82 and if elected the oldest President ever to serve.
If he chooses not to run and backs his VP Kamala Harris, we know the blatant racism of the political right would give a new Trump candidacy strong support.
Her candidacy, despite growing support for minorities and Harris’ record of calm, moderate performance, should be coupled with Biden’s successful first term.
Such longer range conjectures are highly speculative, but it doesn’t hurt to argue that if the above facts hold up Biden even at 82 should run and would likely be re-elected with Harris as his VP.
Thus, if at any point Biden decided for age or health reasons to resign, we would by electing these two again taken out a strong anti-Trump insurance policy!
Of course, the most unlikely of my many above speculations is that Trump by then will not be a major political factor or that even the GOP will be willing to stomach its present leadership if it wants to win a national election.
Meantime, climate change progress, jobs created by more infrastructure spending, improving racial tolerance, rising numbers of politically active younger liberal voters could offer the best longer term insurance to provide for the survival and improvement of our democracy.
Press release for my book, “Trump Becoming Macbeth” suggests that “Trump could win in 2024” which you can read here.
