Symbolism can be so powerful as we have seen in the rise of the demagogues of history and their effectiveness in then militating to the societies they dominate.
The rise of the Hitler in Germany stands as number one for the 20th Century.
Since we are only 2 decades into the 21st, the jury is still out but no one could doubt who the candidate would be so far for Demagogue of this Century.
The dictionary tells us helpfully the definition of the word:
A leader who obtains power by means of impassioned appeals to the emotions and prejudices of the populace.
To anyone watching his arrival on the public stage from his efforts at turning Atlantic City into a gambling Mecca which failed dramatically, Donald J. Trump’s use of deceptive symbolism in pursuit of his goals should have long alerted a broader public.
His escape from his gambling bankruptcy by making to his creditors buy into the alleged symbolism value of his brand name was lucky for him.
He successfully argued his lenders against foreclosures on his properties, then had the time for him to find ways to transfer his potential losses to others.
How that happened is chronicled in books such as Trumped!: The Inside Story of the Real Donald Trump–His Cunning Rise and Spectacular Fall. Summarized here:
ON TOP OF THE WORLD … IN A HOUSE OF CARDS The tabloids tracked his every move. The business magazines predicted his demise. And the public couldn’t get enough. But the only people privy to Donald Trump’s real story were the members of his inner circle—men such as Jack O’Donnell, a top executive at Atlantic City’s Trump Plaza Casino until April, 1990. For three years O’Donnell witnessed the goings-on in the House of Trump that the people only guessed at. Now he reveals what he saw. Here’s the inside story of Trump’s legendary tirades, his convenient forgetfulness, and the infamous Donald Trump ego. O’Donnell tells how the Plaza staff catered to Trump’s personal whims, and to those of his mistress—and how the man who built the largest gambling hall in the world knew little about running a casino. From the hypocrisy, bad deals, and the monumental debt to the untold tales of Marla and Ivana, Trumped! rips the mask off the mighty Trump facade—revealing a man whose castle is about to collapse.
The most obvious false symbolism was his persona on his TV show The Apprentice which made his election according to some observers possible.
Except he didn’t fall.
Then his very slim Electoral College election allowed those disastrous 4 years of his Presidency!
He got elected at a unique time by capitalizing on the political ignorance of too many voters who didn’t check his history, the failure of Democrats to address long before the problems of too many forgotten Americans and the anti-feminist, racist revulsion to Obama’s successor, Hillary Clinton, who was looking a bit shopworn after two terms of her husband.
Trump’s symbolically effective sales pitch of Make America Great Again worked and we were off on his greedy, ego obsessed, incompetent, ravaging of our precious and suddenly fragile democracy.
How this miscreant was not ousted by conviction for 2 impeachment at the end of his malevolent tenancy shows how sick his party was and is now.
The fact that 39 million American adults refuse COVID shots also symbolizes the breakdown of our democracy. Read here from page one NY Times 12/26/21.
Hospitals in Ohio are running low on beds and staff recently took out a full-page newspaper ad pleading with unvaccinated Americans, roughly 15% of the adult population, to finally get the shot. It read, simply: “Help.” https://t.co/aPr60kpxWn

Just read the 12/31/21 Newsweek article which made my blood run cold.
These are the first paragraphs:
Of special anxiety should also be the very real threat about the upcoming elections.
The prevalence of violence argued in the December 31st issue of Newsweek makes one’s blood run cold. Here is a brief sample:
Mike “Wompus” Nieznany is a 73-year-old Vietnam veteran who walks with a cane from the combat wounds he received during his service. That disability doesn’t keep Nieznany from making a living selling custom motorcycle luggage racks from his home in Gainesville, Georgia. Neither will it slow him down when it’s time to visit Washington, D.C.—heavily armed and ready to do his part in overthrowing the U.S. government.
Millions of fellow would-be insurrectionists will be there, too, Nieznany says, “a ticking time-bomb” targeting the Capitol. “There are lots of fully armed people wondering what’s happening to this country,” he says. “Are we going to let Biden keep destroying it? Or do we need to get rid of him? We’re only going to take so much before we fight back.” The 2024 election, he adds, may well be the trigger.
Read it here and make your own assessment.

Perhaps only the arrival of COVID19 saved us from a second Trump term.
Republican leaders like House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell knew that their demographic base was waning fast and that they needed to mount the attack on voting law. Trump’s claim of voter fraud motivated their voters and those elected whether they believed him or not, didn’t standup!
Biden’s election was a concerned citizen retreat from the massive drunk many naïve Americans had gone on, but like any hangover recovery it leaves many experiencing the painful aftermath and some keep on drinking the Kool Aid.
Obviously that Newsweek article makes traditional hopes for a comfortable return to peaceful elections unrealistic.
We see complex and unique forces were coming into frightening coalition. For example, the urgency of treating climate change and dealing with the immigration worldwide movement of poor and desperate populations. These challenges with will require the kind of world government cooperation we have yet to see happen.
These major disrupters are not fully recognized as symptoms of the underlying growth and presence of excess human numbers.
While many experts have argued about this population excess no adequate action from leadership has ensued.

While both parties ignored and deferred paying for fixing our aging infrastructure, passage of a significant support law for that purpose has yet to be matched by catch up legislation for the deferred human needs of many of our citizens.
The passage of Biden’s Build Back Better bill would have insured a start on those neglected human priorities.
Whether some of that urgently needed funding can happen remains uncertain.
The proper results of the 2022 midterms are at risk. Worse our democracy faces the horror of another Trump term. I have long predicted a great awakening about Trump’s unfitness, which the unending disclosure of his toxic character seems not to register with far too many who should by this time know better!
I am especially disgusted and concerned about those elected Republicans in Congress who apparently would gladly kill our democracy for re-election.
Troubled times indeed and as I have said often, I remain hopeful but not optimistic.
