The recent farce at the Defense Department was a total embarrassment. It was a gross violation of national security. Gathering all the top brass in the military together in one place and publicizing it beforehand was an invitation to terrorists or other evil doers. It it were so important it should have been done in secret and only announced later.
It wasted millions of dollars and took highly competent and serious men and women away from their vital duties. It was a publicity and political event quite unnecessary to bring these men and women in person. And it foisted on them speeches which might be given to a high school class. The speeches were puerile and offensive.
Two office-holders with little understanding of national security gave ‘pep talks’ of little effect to those who do not need them. These officers each individually had more knowledge and experience than the speakers.
Their lack of applause was military discipline. The idea that Trump came in at the last moment is laughable; I believe it was planned from the beginning. This man is actually commander-in-chief and said things that no competent person would even think of. His bigotry was in full display earlier when he fired top female and black officers.
His ideas of using the military as a national police force is not only a bad idea but illegal. Using an American city as a test place to counter invaders is unthinkable except by someone who is as ignorant as this speaker.
Anyway there are no invaders. They are citizens opposing the false ideas in Trump’s head with their constitutional rights of freedom of speech.
Trying to politicize the Defense Department is a gross evil they are trying to effect and needs to be halted.
Paul Silverstone is the author of several books on naval vessels including a five-volume series covering all US warships from 1775 to 2007. His latest book “The Navy of the 21st Century” was published in 2024. He is a graduate of Yale University (BA 1953) where he majored in political science and international relations, and Harvard Law School (JD 1956) and for many years was in the travel business in New York City. In 2020 he moved from New York to Vancouver, Canada.
He does genealogical research on his extended family with particular emphasis on families from the United States, Canada, Poland and Ukraine. Paul was a member of the Executive Council of the New York Jewish Genealogical Society from 1996 to 2020 and was Treasurer from 2000 to 2007. He was the treasurer and board member of the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies (IAJGS) from 2009 to 2015.
