A few nights ago, I was forced to admit that I had exhausted my store of ideas for a way out of the Trumpian nightmare—the dark one we Americans are stumbling through, the one where some of us are being snatched off streets and disappeared, and others maimed and murdered. I reached the bottom of the well of my acquired verbiage and rhetoric that I’d spent the flower of my youth banking. I fell into writer’s block. My hand shook as I picked up my pen against Trump’s trail of constitutional corpses and the continuing ruination of our civility, that leaves in its wake the death of liberties for oh so many Americans and law‑abiding immigrants.
Frightened by my sudden loss of self—my impotence, actually—I wandered into the cold January night, where I heard her voice. It came from afar, above me. What I heard scared me. Was I hallucinating? No. I heard what I heard.
She said, “I stand two hundred and fifty years old, staring at my own reflection as if for the first time. I hardly recognize myself. The weight of my history, my grief, my contradictions—everything I once hid behind: flags, myths, and slogans—presses against me like a storm I can no longer outrun.
“And so I speak now not as the America you were taught to salute, but as the America I have become.

“I feel the death of the illusion that I was always righteous, always exceptional, always chosen. That story has cracked. Its shell lies at my feet. And in its place rises something darker, truer, and far more demanding.
“Our leader tells me to stop clinging to the illusions that have ruled me—illusions of innocence, of purity, of unbroken virtue. He tells me to admit the truth I have avoided: that I have become something I once swore to resist.
“This painted dictator drags me to the mirror, forcing me to see the rot beneath the paint. He tears through my self‑centered myths, rips apart the lies I told myself about freedom, justice, and who I believed I was. America is not for the faint of heart.”
She went silent.
Her confession frightened me. In my heart I know that fear itself is a message, not a verdict. I screamed out, “But America, you are mine. You are the only path I have left.”
Out of the quiet moment, her voice erupted out of the heavens: “The truth’s raw exposure becomes the moment I step unhidden. His vacant mind is the void through which I must enter—a place where identity dissolves, where opposites collapse, where I am stripped down to the raw, trembling core of what I might become.

“I have no choice. It is only a delusion that power makes me whole, a delusion that authority makes me safe, a delusion that I can silence dissent and still call myself free.
“Cut through the false hope I fed my people—the lies whispered by those who rule with a clenched fist and call it order. They force me to confront the truth of my present moment: I have drifted toward authoritarianism not out of strength, but out of a small man’s narcissistic fear of dying and being forgotten.
“I feel that undercurrent rising in me again—Afterall I was forged in those moments when life dropped me hard and all I could do was to inch ahead. No banners lifted. Just the raw will to face myself. Straight, no chaser.

“My ideals have been unmade and erased over countless years and times by slavery, by genocide, by civil war, by greed, by inequality, by the violence I inflicted and the violence endured. And now, in this moment of reckoning, I finally understand: because I have been unmade in countless ways, I know the ways to rebuild once this night passes. If I dare to shed my ego. If I dare to face the void. If I dare to become something truer than the myth you once worshipped.
“This is my reflection. My confession. My plea.”
“And yes—when this night passes—perhaps my rebirth.”
